Katherine made way for the stairs. When they came down she slowly started walking up them, half fearing she was going to fall off -

James floated into the attic. He tried examining the shapes once again. There has to be a clue, right? This has to be the key out, why else would this be here? -

Katherine knelt by the markings. "Probably," she said. "I don't know how it works, though." -
"I don't either. Maybe there are certain items we need?" James asked. He tried to think of any items that seemed different.

Katherine looked at it. "Maybe. I have no idea what this is."

"There is that paper over there, but I can't read all of the words. I've never heard of them before!" James exclaimed. "Does that help?"

(I was just gonna make up a stupid riddle as they figure out what items they need around the house. It opens up the portal. They need certain items and a spell book to get them back or something like that)

Katherine walked over to the half crumpled piece of paper. After flattening it out as much as she could, she started to read it. -
Long ago, where the mother would sleep,
Came a visitor, who would silently creep.
The visitor grabbed the piece of sporting equipment,
And had the poor, poor, woman beat.
"What does it say?" James asked. -
(that third line XD)
Katherine repeated the words to him. "It was obviously written not that long ago, because I'm guessing they used something like a baseball bat or something in the poem." -
(I didn't know how to allude to what it is lmao feel free to make your own hints)
"The parents room? That's the one next to the bathroom upstairs! Let's go!" James floated down the attic. "This isn't that hard! How did I get stuck in here for so long?" -
"Because you couldn't read the note," Katherine said, following him.

James looked around the room. "The whole closet is filled with sports stuff. Baseball bats, golf clubs, tennis rackets, bowling balls...."
