Bluefly put her paw on Drakestorm's to show him that she had his back. Nightpelt heaved a deep breath and began.
"Your father was a wonderful tom when I met him," she said. "Strong, clever, and sweet. We met by the border of our clans. He complimented me and told me that he was in love with me. I believed him and became his mate. I had my first litter of kits and was a proud mother for three, short moons."
Her voice faltered for a moment. "Then InfernoClan invaded. They took my kits away. The only ones that weren't taken were Bluekit, Reedkit, Treekit, Clearkit, and a few others." -
"...Am I related to my absolute worst enemy, Treeslash?" He wondered aloud.
-
"No, you're not," Nightpelt said, before frowning. "Distantly, perhaps. But anyway. I went to your father and asked him to return my kits. He convinced me that he was going to take good care of them, so I gave in. When InfernoClan and MossClan fought in battle, your siblings died. You were the sole survivor and had never been found until that rabbit."
"I learned later that my mate had betrayed me with a kittypet named Willow. I was young and foolish when I had you and I have matured since then." -
"I remember that battle..." He mewed.
-
"You have half-siblings," Nightpelt murmured, closing her eyes in remembrance. "I saw them only once, when they were very young. Two gray and one white as snow."
-
"Are they in Twolegplace or with InfernoClan?" He asked.
-
"I wouldn't know," Nightpelt said. "If their mother had any sense, they'd be living with Twolegs. Your father was obsessed with making himself a legacy and having a great heir to oversee it."
-
Drakestorm shifted his paws. "At least he's dead.."
-
"Yes," Nightpelt said in a quiet voice. "It was...for the better."
Bluefly nuzzled her mother-in-law to comfort her. "You could not have known." -
“So he’s with the Dark Forest now... right?” Drakestorm asked.
-
Nightpelt nodded slowly. "I don't know how he died. He came to me in a dream as if all could be same again. He was planning to kill me so we could be together. But I learned how to fight off the dreams."
-
He nodded.
-
-
"You can fight the dreams too," Nightpelt said encouragingly. "I know you can."
-
"But how?" He asked.
