"They're doing better, I think," he said, keeping his focus on the road. "They still argue here and there, but they've stopped fighting. I'm not sure if it's a rouse they're putting on while waiting for me to move out, or if they're being genuine about it." He glanced over at Jacob, offering him a smile. "Kinda glad to get away from it, y'know? I love them, but they set a terrible example for relationships."
-
“Yeah… but it’s better now. That’s good. And I managed to stomp out any bad habits, didn’t I?” Jacob said with a smile. He watched the scenery flash by outside his window.
-
"Yeah, you did." He was silent for a good portion of the ride. As they got closer to their destination, he asked rather suddenly, "No one has made any comments about us, right?"
-
Jacob crinkled his brow. “No? Has anyone said anything to you?” He asked, confusion coating his voice.
-
"No, not at all. I'm just..." Callum looked at Jacob, frowning. "I'm always worried, you know? I want to protect you, and if anyone threatened you- or us- I'd do anything I could to keep them from doing it again." He paused as he pulled into a parking spot. His knuckles whitened as he gripped the steering wheel a bit too tight. "Plus, my sister made a comment. About our future. She thinks we won't make it, and it really freaked me out."
-
"Honey..." Jacob leaned over, putting a hand over Callum's. "You shouldn't let what people say get to you - you taught me that, remember? Nothing can get in our way now; not even your sister. I believe in you. I believe in us. Okay?" The timid boy smiled up at Callum.
-
Callum nodded, slowly releasing his grip on the wheel and moving his hand onto the gear to park the car. He smiled back at Jacob, nodding again. "You're right," he said. "I'm really sorry for changing topics like that. I believe in us, too. We've been through everything together." He leaned over, pecking Jacob on the cheek. "Let's go get some ice cream, yeah?"
-
Jacob beamed. "It's okay. I'm glad you can tell me if somethings wrong. Let's go!" He cried, hopping out of the car enthusiastically and taking Callum's hand.
-
Callum lightly squeezed Jacob's hand as he led him into the ice cream parlor. To his surprise, there weren't many people inside. "Do you already know what you want?"
-
"Of course - one scoop sweet cream, one scoop dark chocolate. You?" Jacob said, thankful that the ice cream place wasn't very busy. He didn't do well in crowds.
-
"Strawberry," he said, glancing through the new flavors. "With sprinkles. Lots and lots of sprinkles." He released Jacob's hand to retrieve his wallet from his back pocket and went up to the counter to order for them both. He paid the person at the counter and returned to Jacob's side with their cups of ice cream. "Where do you want to sit?"
-
Jacob took his cup of ice cream from Callum's hand and glanced around the parlor. "The window?" he suggested, gesturing to a high top table against a large window.
-
(Sorry for the late response!!)
"Sounds good to me!" Callum walked over to the table, waiting for Jacob to sit down before he did. He began to flip the spoon in his hands, admiring his partner from across the table. "I can't wait for us to go to college," he said. "So much freedom.." -
"It'll be heavenly!" Mumbled Jacob. "Free from our parents, after all these years! I can't wait." He grinned at the tousled-haired Callum.
