Only Travis and Connor are technically related.
And too be a family doesn't mean "siblings" persay. It can be friends, lovers, sisters and brothers. So like travis and connor had a brother relationship while Travis and another character would have a friend like relationship.

Bio: When she was little she lived in Chicago. Her father was in the wrong place at the wrong time when a murder occurred. The murderer got away, and her father was arrested. He failed his trial because his lawyer was a racist and didn't care about the case. Kate dropped out of school when she was seven to take care of her mother. The school reported that decision to Children's Aid and she was taken from her home when she was twelve. Kate traveled all around America and learned many different cultures by traveling from foster home to foster home. No one seemed to care about a black girl who couldn't do math and only painted, read, or played video games. Sometimes someone did want her but for terrible reasons. By the time she was adopted by Miss. Makerie, she had developed trust and angered issues. Eventually she came to love this family with all her heart. Her dream is to run the bakery and keep up its success.
Other: She writes to her father and mother every Sunday. -
They are like a family. They are only legally related to Miss. Makerie. And the only blood relatives are Travis and Conner. If they were all raised together, then it would be weird for them to date. But they have only really known eachother for a few years. It happens with many step siblings/adoptive 'siblings'.

Bio: His parents left him at the orphanage when he was a baby. He was adopted as a toddler. But when he was twelve he was sent back for being gay. He got adopted again by amazing a couple with his buisness talent but when he was fifteen they got arrested for running a prostitute buisness. He visits them once a month and they are helping him prepare for University.
Other: He is afraid that someday he'll have to choose between his current family and his old family. -
