But we could be traveling mercenaries looking for work in the Kalos region or something

Not really, I can't think of anything else at the moment. I'll probably get ideas as we go along with the plot.

I think I have an idea
Okay so rather than mercenaries We are a group of units sent by the Hoenn empire to suppourt their ally's in [insert preferred region here]. There may not be very many of us, but we are the best of the best from where we hail, so our small squadron has the attack power of an army in theory. The emperor gets word of their reinforcements and sends a group of troops to escort them to the capital but the welcoming party is intercepted by spies from the enemy empire, interrogated for information on their duties and such, then killed. Now, the enemy empire is sending out a large reward to anyone who can stop, capture, or kill the reinforcement group. Along the way, the group will see lots of assassination attempts on them, bandit raids, etc. Basically, they have a long journey ahead of them before they reach the capital.

Personality: Maggy is a easily flustered person but is great at her job. She will stand up for friends, but often back down and submit when confronted by others who have authority over her. Although her family is known for being gritty and tough, Maggy has never been one to try and start fights but rather avoid them as much as she can without feeling useless, making her perfect for a role as a spy.
Other: Maggy is known for her speed and maneuverability on the field. When it comes to combat, she falls behind which is why she often relies on a backup plan just in case something goes amidst.
Hobbies: Playing hide and seek, loving on children, and cooking.
Favorite food: Orange chicken with rice.

Personality: Tyuga is that strong female role that people say video games need, even if she identifies as a male. Tyuga is rough, tough, and gritty all over. She will always accept a challenge from anyone, especially if it's from Kalos scum. Speaking of which, Tyuga is a racist when it comes to Kalos-specific pokemon, so no Kalos pokemans gonna walk past Tyuga without a glare of disgust from her at the least.
Other: Tyuga's parents were foreigners from Jhoto and had immigrated during the original pokemon war to Hoenn to escape the violence, poverty, and famine between Kanto and Jhoto. As a kid, she was teased by the locals for being a lesbian. Due to constant torment, she became trans and beat up anyone who said she was a girl.
Hobbies: Drinking, Training, and practicing hand to hand combat. You know, 'man' stuff.

Class/role: Negotiator / Ronin style samurai
Weapon: Two blades permanently attached to his wrist via soul handcuffs.
Personality: Galla is a lone Jiang-si whom's owner set free to do whatever he pleased. Ever since then, Galla has been a lover and writer of haikus on a search to find a soul, male or female, who will love him regardless of him being technically dead. Galla is very attached and will stay close and be affectionate towards anyone who may seem to have love interests in him. Really, he's a lone wolf who wishes to not be alone.
Other: His soul cuffs were attached before the reincarnation, attaching themselves to his soul so they could never leave. Gallades are known to be used as Jiang-si once they die, so Galla doesn't feel too out of place even though Gallades are a rare species nowadays. The large sharp object through his chest is there to keep the spirit and mind in sync.
Hobbies: Writing different forms of poetry, asking people out on dates, and sitting alone in corners thinking about various subjects. -
