I'm rehashing a plot I made a while ago that died soon after its birth because DAMMIT I WORK HARD ON WHAT LITTLE I CAN COME UP WITH.
It is the distant future. The gap between social classes has expanded to an abysmal chasm, engulfing the middle class entirely and leaving nothing in between pure poverty and unimaginable wealth. The wealthy have been able to shelter themselves from the plight of the poor for a long time, but violent diseases have culminated within the lowest social castes of civilization and crept upward, transmitted by the public servants to the upper class. The illness has taken the lives of countless forgotten children, but with the lives of the affluent now in danger, demand for a cure suddenly has meaning.
A miracle drug is created by the Lindenglo Corporation, and all they need to get it on the market now is a successful trial run. The high class is, naturally, far above that, and, from within the safety of their quarantined homes, they're willing to pay lower class families handsomely in exchange for sending their infected children to take part in the study. Seeing a chance for a brighter future, in both a newfound financial stability and a clean bill of health for their otherwise hopelessly ill children, a large portion of the lower class accepts this offer, and applies to have their children test the drug. Most are accepted into the study. All, in fact.
The miracle "drug", as it turns out, takes the form of the surgical placement of microscopic machines in the body of the host. These machines shut down most parts of the body, placing the patient in a coma and slowing the circulation of the sickness as they attempt to filter out and replace all that is affected. In the meantime, vital nutrients are pumped through the docile bodies to keep them strong. One significant issue with this cure, however, is that the machines are linked to one another, transmitting and connecting to those within the bodies of other patients.
Each host finds themselves in an imagined world within their consciousness that matches the world they live in as closely as their memories will allow. Freed from the laws of physics and humanity, the children are able to manipulate the world around them, doing and creating whatever they please. The first few days within this new world of pure creativity are spent growing accustomed to the endless possibilities and the lifestyle. Slowly, however, the disease that humanity has never managed to overcome- the thirst for power- works its way among their ranks, and war breaks out as armies arise and attempt to take this haven of infinite potential into their own hands. Those with the greatest imaginations, the more intelligent, and those who can think the fastest reign victorious as they begin picking their slower opponents off in gruesome ways unimaginable to humanity as we know it.
To the immense horror of Lindenglo, dying within one's conscious appears to result in an immediate shutdown of all brain functionality, effectively placing the victims in a vegetative state from which there is no recovery. By the time they've become aware of this effect, it is impossible to save those who have already been administered the drug. Freeing them from their minds and releasing them to their families would be an unbelievable risk to the company. Unspeakable atrocities have been committed by those in the study, and having done nothing to warn them or their families of this threat, the corporation will be held solely responsible for the losses suffered if they are revealed. The public would hit them with a recoil they could never come back from. As long as the patients remained alive, the corporation could claim that the study was ongoing, and, as such, they are forced to sit back quietly and allow the horror to unfold, unseen and untold within the collective conscious of a bunch of kids who only wanted a chance to live. -
I'll join if you're willing to have me.
