"True." James laughed slightly, then pulled the sirt sleeve on his left arm up, revealing a very old but noticeable cigarette burn mark. "...I've never had a normal childhood. My father would beat me, torture me.. and burn me if I was 'out of line'."
-
*Shirt, not sirt*
-
Absentmindedly her finger came up to touch the old scar, but it quickly came back to her lap. "Same." She said quietly. "Only my mom was involved too. He drank all the time causing him to be enraged. Meanwhile my mom just went out or locked the door to her room, leaving me all alone. With him." She let out a shaky breath. Letting it out was like spilling the beans to a dark secret.
-
With a solemn look, James's gaze came up to her face. "Oh, I'm sorry your father did that.." Without thinking, he embraced her in a warm and soft hug.
-
Claire's body went taut at the warm gesture but slowly relaxed. "It's so late..." She mumbled resting her head in between his neck and shoulder. It had been so long since she had a hug. Almost years.
-
"I know.." He slowly let go of her and smiled, but then noticed what she was wearing. "Uh.. I suppose we should go back inside, considering.." He pointed to her. His face began reddening rapidly.
-
Claire let out a small giggle before wrapping the robe to cover herself. "I really don't care, but I don't know about you." A warm feeling blossomed in her stomach, but it felt so foreign.
-
"Well, it is starting to get cold out here." James noted. "Yeah, let's go back inside." He stood up and held out his hand to help her up. He had started to feel something strange, something that he himself had never experienced with his father.
-
Claire couldn't help to smile. But it wasn't the smile she got after stealing a few rings it was something new and sincere. After getting helped up they went inside together. "Thanks." She said.
-
"You're welcome." He closed the door behind them. James had something he desperately wanted to ask, but he couldn't form his words. He decided to just ask and get it over with. "How did you ever get away?"
-
Slowly her smile turned into a serious in thought expression. "Um, well, by the time I was thirteen she had decided enough was enough, so we planned to get away while my..." Claire felt like saying the word would choke her. "...dad was asleep. So when he did we had our things packed and some money and moved over two towns. We had been doing fine for about a few months until he came banging on our door step. I decided running away while he was on the opposite side of the and steeling things was my best chance at surviving." She took a deep breath remembering that night. "What about you?" She asked pushing a strand of hair away from her face.
-
*Opposite side of the house* (Sorry my sentences got weird. :I)
-
"That's better than my escape, unfortunately." He had a grim look on his face. "He'd killed my mother years before, so I planned on getting retribution. A life for a life. He took my mother's life, so I.."
-
(It's fine.)
-
Claire let out a stifled gasp. "James. That's a terrible thing to do." With her eyebrows knit in thought she spoke again. "I mean, considering what I've done before I don't mean to sound like a hypocrite, but I haven't done anything that bad."
