Sorry I didn't reply! This is how I see soaps:
Soaps (AKA rps) are almost like writing a story. The creator comes up with a plot, and you write parts for your character that goes with the plot. You can do it in first or third person.
For example: Lets say that a girl named Cindy is going to the store.
First person: I walked to the store, my heels clacking against the sidewalk. My hair fell in front of my eyes as the wind blew through the streets. The doors automatically opened and I walked inside.
Third person: Cindy walked to the store, her heels clacked on the sidewalk. Her hair fell in front of her eyes as the wind blew through the streets. The door automatically opened and Cindy walked into the store.
The characters are ones that you create to play as.
For example: This is Cindy's 'skeleton'.
Name: Cindy
Gender: Female
Age: 18
Looks: Long brown hair, green eyes, tan, tall, slim
And this is only a basic skeleton. Usually, the creator of a soap/rp will give you a skeleton to fill out.
You can choose whether to be a girl or a boy. -
Unless it's a homosexual soap. JUST SAYING. Then things get spicy. /winkwink

Lol I taught myself...I still remember my first rp. And my first soap. o3o *old lady voice* BACK IN THE GOOD 'OL DAYS.

Lol. I taught myself as well. Although, a day after I joined, when I knew absolutely nothing about soaping or rping, I embarassed myself. XD

I wasn't too bad. I didn't start until after a few months. I'd stalked a lot, read a lot of soaps and roleplays. My first soap was with a user called ItsAlexxxxx. (Still not sure how many xs he had after his name) who never gets on anymore. My first roleplay was with GoddessA back when the Stage didn't exist. And then I did the soap/rp thingy with OmegaWolf9 for almost a year, but it finally died a few months ago.

My first soap was with Rave, and I've gotten much better and have made many soaps of my own. I haven't RPed at all... So... Yeah.
