God
Do you really think that a being that is intelligent enough to create the entire universe would be so arrogant and petty that he would have people suffer for eternity if they won't be his cheerleader? -
I don't believe that, though. I believe we all have a choice, and God wants no one to perish. Plus, I believe when we die we find out things for good and if we choose God, we go to heaven. You'd have to know for sure before you go either way, which is only fair and I see God as fair. x3 I believe 'witnessing' or sharing your belief is just to help people while still on earth, but only if they're open to the message.
And if I die and nothing happens, I don't feel like I would have lost much at all. -
I read about an Eskimo hunter who asked the local missionary priest,
"If I did not know about God and sin, would I go to hell?"
"No.' Said the priest, 'Not if you did not know."
"Then why,' asked the Eskimo, 'did you tell me?" -
redawn NewbieXD lol!
-
That's one badass Eskimo.
-
I dont believe that hell is a place of eternal suffering.
-
^I do.
I imagine it a big pot, that you fall into and then the devil eats you. ._.
Shdjkswisef 666 adlfcdi.es-guwfhqejf 666 asdjklsjef 666 XD -
LOL.
I imagine it just a place where you regret the many bad things you did. No fire, no brimstone. Just regret.
I also believe that not many people will go to hell. God wants so much for all of us to go to heaven, so he will try his best to have all his children there. -
I'm Roman Catholic, so I can tell you what my church believes on that.
During your life, you have many decisions to make. The devil will often times tempt you, trying to get you to sin. When you make the wrong decision and sin, you grow further from God. There are two types of sin, mortal and venial. A mortal sin, like killing or stealing, will completely destroy your relationship with God. These kinds of sin can only be done if all three of these requirements are fulfilled:
1) You are aware that it is wrong,
2) You do it on your own free will,
3) It is serious (for example, killing a bug won't hurt you, but killing a human being will).
Venial sins, however, are not quite so big. An example of this type of sin would be to keep talking after your teacher said to stop. These sins do harm your relationship with God, however, no matter how many you commit your relationship with him will never be completely destroyed.
For both types of sin, you may go to the Sacrament of Reconciliation to confess if, and only if, you honestly and completely feel sorry for what you did. Otherwise, you will not be forgiven.
If you die before you are able to confess and you truly do feel sorry, God will show mercy upon you and allow you to go to Purgatory, which is where you go to suffer until he decides that you are righteous enough to enter the Kingdom of Heaven. Should you have committed many sins and do not feel sorry for them, or are only sorry that you were caught but not truly sorry that you had sinned, then you go to Hell for eternal torture. (You only go to Hell if you've committed mortal sins, since your relationship with God is nonexistent. If you've committed venial sins, then you go to Heaven after spending a certain amount of time in Purgatory.) -
And another thing, God is extremely merciful. He is literally so merciful that if Hitler were truly sorry for what he did God would welcome him with open arms (no joke).
-
There are a lot of things wrong with that post...
Three requirements for a mortal sin.
1) "You are aware that it is wrong." Define wrong?
2) "You do it of your own free will." Define free will?
3) "It is serious." Define serious?
Further more, this leaves a lot of room for grey area. Places where you aren't being clear or where there will be a lot of "special cases". The finite word of God apparently has a lot of loop holes and flaws in it.
"An example of this type of sin would be to keep talking after your teacher said to stop."
Timothy 2-12: "I do not permit a woman to teach or to assume authority over a man; she must be quiet."
By your own bible, I have more authority to talk than my teacher does. Once again with that whole grey area and loop holes thing we talked about.
"if you honestly and completely feel sorry for what you did"
I'm not going to apologize for being human. So I guess that because I have "mortal sin" and am not going to beg forgiveness for that "mortal sin" from the f---ing guy who gave us "mortal sin", then that same guy is going to cast me into hell for all eternity of torture. Really classy.
"If you die before you are able to confess and you truly do feel sorry, God will show mercy upon you and allow you to go to Purgatory, which is where you go to suffer until he decides that you are righteous enough"
What the actual f---? So if I don't climb out of my death bed and crawl my crippled ass to church to tell a priest that I'm sorry for being human, I'm still going to be tortured? Once again we keep winding up back on those loop holes and grey areas.
That's most of the horrible things I got from your post. Now for some of the points where you contradicted yourself! :D
"God is extremely merciful"
"Should you have committed many sins and do not feel sorry for them, or are only sorry that you were caught but not truly sorry that you had sinned, then you go to hell for eternal torture."
Totally and unquestionably loving and merciful my ass.
And that last lovely sentence.
-Since Hitler was a devout Christian, he's apparently in hell right now.
-While any hooker who enjoyed their job is now being tortured for all eternity. -
I can see your misunderstandings and will try my best to clarify them. You must keep in mind, however, that I'm not a teacher or an expert. I'm just someone who does my best to be a good Christian.
In reply to your first problem:
1) You know what you're doing. For instance, you're not just some kid who stole a one hundred dollar bill because you thought it was pretty. You're a capable person who is stealing it because you want the money.
2) You do it of your own free will. No one is forcing you to do it or they will you and your family. You're doing it because you want to.
3) It is serious. The fifth commandment states that one shall not kill, however, killing a bug is not a mortal sin. It's not even a sin, it's just a bug, not a human being. It's not a crime against God or humanity. It's not serious!
Timothy 2:12 is referring to the priesthood. Only men may become priest and teach during mass (reading the Gospel, giving the homily, and blessing the Eucharist) Learn to interpret your Bible.
To be honestly and completely sorry for what you did is NOT being sorry for being human. God created humanity in his own image. Humans originally were in the state of "original justice". In this state, sin did not exist. The "serpent" (devil) tempted Eve with the fruit of the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. The devil tempted her by saying that she would become like God, and once she ate of the fruit Adam ate from it as well. This was the first sin humanity ever committed. Once they ate of the fruit, original sin began to be passed on generation after generation to every human being. This is called the "Fall of Humanity". And if you're not sorry for killing someone (which is a mortal sin) then you're just a dick, as killing is a crime against humanity no matter if you have a god or not. Same with stealing a large amount of money, or any mortal sin really. Think of everything that you consider to be a crime against mankind. Whatever you're thinking about is basically a mortal sin. Venial sins are basically the little things that aren't going to cause much harm. It is a bit confusing, I will admit it. That's what I was taught in religion class as a child, and that's the best I can explain it to you. If you're still interested in this, then you can look it up in the CCC (Catechism of the Catholic Church).
You don't have to go to church to confess because of the Last Rites, which is given to someone who is gravely ill. The last rites may also be preformed on a dead person if necessary. To suffer in Hell is 100% complete torture.
And now I will reply to the contradictions you brought up.
Suffering in Purgatory is not the same as suffering in Hell. Many priests that I know consider Purgatory to be when you become a "ghost". While it is never officially explained by the Church, many believe that the punishment of Purgatory is not being able to communicate with the living while still being on Earth. Through this, people who go to Purgatory repent and get to Heaven.
Yes, I would assume that Hitler is in Hell right now. I was merely using him as an example. Hookers can go to Heaven if they're sorry for stripping for random dudes that pick them up off the streets (although I personally don't believe 100% in the "premarital sex is wrong" thing, even though my religion does). God is merciful to everyone, whether they are Christian or not. He would welcome an atheist (I am only using atheists as an example because they believe in no god. I am not stating that atheists are sinners or bad people or anything.) who has realized his wrongness in what he has done just as soon as he would welcome a Catholic priest who rarely sinned during his entire life. If you are a "devout" Christian and commit mortal sins without being sorry for them you will go to Hell just as soon as anyone else who has committed a mortal sin and is not sorry for it. -
Thank you for responding maturely and logically. You have no idea how rare I actually see theists do that.
It's early and I'm tired. But by the looks of things you made a very good argument. The only way I could really find faults with it would be to pick at small details.
Although there is still one issue I have found that isn't just a small detail.
It's the idea of eternal torture in hell.
Supposedly hell is supposed to be a punishment for those who have done wrong. You do wrong, so you go to hell. But hell is finite. It is like the death sentence in the real world. There is no hope for redemption. Personally, I have a problem picturing an all loving God watch you do wrong all your life (70-80 years), and then spending the rest of eternity(an immeasurably long and infinite amount of time) in agonizing torture.
No chance of redemption. No pity. No love. No hope. An all loving God is turning a cold shoulder. And that is a dick move in my book.
(I've got more questions, but like I said; it's early and I'm tired. I'll type them up later.) -
No problem. I understand how other theists can be annoying. I find them annoying too sometimes. Especially Jenovah's Witness. No offense is meant, but seriously? Going door to door and asking, "Escuse me, but are you familiar with the Lord, Jesus Christ?" It's shoving it down people's throats and rather obnoxious in my opinion. And thank you for saying that I put up a good argument.
In response to your problem, it has been stated that no one truly knows what is going on in God's mind. The best answer I could possibly give you is that when one has committed a mortal sin and is not sorry for that sin he has completely severed his relationship with God. Since Heaven is thought to be a place based completely on a close relationship with God, people who have committed mortal sins cannot be there. People who have committed mortal sins yet wish to repent go to Purgatory until their repentance is complete. When someone has committed a mortal sin is not sorry and has no intention of repenting will go to Hell. No one but God can give you the answer to why he does this though. -
Oh, darn. In my third post I forgot to put kill between will and you in number two of the list. It should read as follows:
2) You do it of your own free will. No one is forcing you to do it or they will kill you and you family. You're doing it because you want to.
And another thing in that same post, the sentence were I stated "To go to Hell is 100% complete torture." Should have been the first sentence of the paragraph following the bold print.
Sorry, it was late at night when I made that post. :P
