I'm not picking and choosing it. This is stuff I've been taught by religious scholars that I know. They say that the literary style (mainly in Genesis) is symbolic. At the time it was written, it was understood as symbolic, but as time went on people started to take it literally. The only parts of the Bible that are to be taken literally (once literary style is taken into account), are your Gospels, Leviticus, and the Letters. Even some of the historical parts (such as Judges) have been changed over time by people before they were written down. There is no telling exactly how much of it is symbolic and literal because we are not in God's head, but the main reason for that is because time has warped the oral tradition, therefore, the written tradition will be warped as well. While it is infallible, it is not always literal.

So the infallible word of God is completely subject to us figuring out what is literal and not. Do your scholars claim to know the intentions of God? Isn't that blasphemy? And how is it that the word of God can't withstand human taint? Isn't it a little sad that me posting this on GTQ is less subject to human error than the true word of God?

And of course, both kish and Vik were sarcastic.

"There is no telling exactly how much of it is symbolic and literal because we are not in God's head," answer your first and second questions. It's from my previous post.
In answer to your last questions, that is because the Bible was written in the literary style of the time it was written in. Since the Bible was not written all at once, the different books of the Bible are written in different styles. At the time it was written in, people understood the meaning. Since no one seems to care to actually read and understand those styles of writing, many people do not understand the imagery in it. While humans did warp the oral tradition, it was still guided by the Holy Spirit so that it would remain infallible.
For a better explanation of this from St. Thomas Aquinas, click here, but please refer to Article 10 because that is what is relevant to the conversation. -
You do realize that the entire document you sent me was He says, she says, this is how I feel, this is how they felt, this is our opinion, type of writing; right? There was literally no mention of how to distinguish between literal and metaphorical anywhere in it. And in fact, the only mention it has towards interpretation is that you should interpret it as both. So "Happy is he who dashes their children against the rocks" still literally means "Happy is he who dashes their children against the rocks."

@Rascal you claim your god to be infinite while many of things your god does is very immature, like putting his own creations in hell where the worst punishments happen, maybe because they didn't believe in him(your god)or probably did something not very bad,but still against his religion(sex before marriage for example).
I think Bob was right, that arguing logic to religion is very pointless because basically religion was created to cover what they didn't understand which is basically f--- logic.
I don't get how you are trying to defend christianity logically. -
Being an atheist doesn't mean you want "disease conquered, poverty vanished, [or] war eliminated", it just means you don't follow a religion and have no religious beliefs whatsoever. Being an atheist doesn't make you some evolved being or higher than person of faith. I may be late on this, but I'm an arrogant f--- who doesn't f---ing care what any of you put.

"Atheism is, in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities."
So not only don't they believe in any religion, they also don't believe in any god.
