Thread Topic: MY Honest Thoughts On Religion
-
I think there is some sort of religion out there, but not what we think of. Maybe there’s an afterlife but not like one we envision in our head.
Tbh I think religion can be stupid sometimes. There’s just so much stuff in there that’s so unbelievable it’s ridiculous.
The Bible was written by sexist men so far back we don’t even have proof that they wrote it. I mean obviously someone wrote it but it could be just one person fooling all of us that wrote it.
And also I’m tired of people thinking the Bible says a specific thing. One line is not worth a life. Also the Bible was originally written in a language no one can truly fully understand, so god knows (😉) what’s actually written in there.
Please don’t attack me on what I wrote. This is just my opinion, and if you respect mine I’ll respect yours. -
Hi! I think you raise some interesting points. I just wanted to respond to a few based on some things I know about the Bible.
The Bible is central to the ancient nation of Israel. The Tanakh, or Old Testament, was written mainly in Hebrew as well as Aramaic. The New Testament was written in Koine Greek. These are all languages scholars today study, so we can know a great deal about what was written in the Bible.
It is highly unlikely the Bible was written by one sexist man just to fool us. The Bible takes place in vastly different times in human history. The Torah, believed to be written by Moses, consists of the first five books of the Bible. It details creation, the fall of mankind, the law, and the journey of the Jewish people into the "promised land." The rest of the Tanakh can be separated into the Nevi'im (the prophets) and the Ketuvim (the writings).
The New Testament consists of the Gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John), Acts (written by Luke), the epistles, or letters, written largely by Paul, and Revelation. These were written at a time where believing that Jesus is the Christ was not a socially advantageous decision to make.
If religious power was what you were after, you'd sooner choose to be a Pharisee or Sadducee if you were Jewish, or involved in a temple if you were Roman. If you wanted political power, Rome was your best bet. Being a Christian could get you eaten by wild animals in a colosseum, crucified, or set on fire. It was not a decision to make lightly.
I think we generally spend very little time as a society considering the content of the Bible, in context and as a unified whole. I didn't understand Christianity until I read the Bible for myself. It presents us with a very clear message, that a personal, omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent God created the world for a reason, created mankind to have a relationship with Him, and has made a way for us to be reconciled to Him. It can only be true or false. We all have to respond with either yes or no.
I don't say any of this as an attack. I was an agnostic before I was a Christian. I believe there has to be objective truth that is above any of our subjective opinions. If we seek, we shall find.
