Atheistic Satanismhasbeen around for a long time, but Theistic Satanism I think, it might have been around eirlier but not very well know, but I think it actually started really coming up with the Norwegian Black Metal Scene, with all the curch arsons and stuff.

multitheistic satanism is a pagan religion who worship multiple deity and believe by engaging in natrual fun, or stimulating activities- sports, dancing, fighting, kissing ect... you are honoring the gods.
it was created to actively oppse what many considered oppressive christianity, and was named for-yes as ham said- likely to sling mud in the christian eyes, or pure shock value.
MONOtheistic satanism is theoretically a christian religion werein the practitioners worship one god (lucifer), and that all pleasure and laughing and "sinful" delight is good, and that magic is a birth right. this is basically the christian religion flipped around.
and it was named in honor of the deity it serves -
