Thread Topic: On the subject of "God will make you a better person"

Hi
my name is Carri (not really)
and I'm an egalitarian, environmentalist artist.
I like to use my artwork to bring awareness of important issues in the world.
My favourite past time when I have money is taking the homeless to a nice dinner. If I don't have enough money and just loose change, It's given to charity, the homeless, or donated to a local small business (because they need love too!)
I also plan on volunteering in a local project where you help reunite homeless people with their families.
Sometimes I volunteer to read to small children during the summer for fun.
I have a "Charity fund" for when I start selling the shirts where I take a portion of the profits and split said portion in half, half goes to a "charity of the month" the other half goes towards me buying food for those who can't afford it.
I also serve as an advice giver, a shoulder to cry on, and an elder sister.
The purpose of this thread is to show that you don't need an outer influence to be a good person, you can be a good person if you want to.
I'm an apatheist--Formerly Satanist (DURING THIS PERIOD I WAS ALSO DOING SIMILAR STUFF BUT NOT AS MUCH BECAUSE I LACKED A JOB)
I'm not religious.
Now, based on the information above
tell me
Does it look like I need "God" to be a good person? If so, how much of a "better person" could I possibly be because I'm seriously running out of options so unless you want me to go to Africa and build schools, I'm running out of ideas. -
JesusIsTheWay Novice@Carri wow this is really good! :) I don't do a tenth of these. My dear being a good person doesn't make a person's live complete. Humans need hope and love that can be found worshipping a true God. Those homeless people need prayers too and if you could tell them about Jesus it would do them a lot of good.
-
Some of us do feel complete without worshipping anything.
-
JesusIsTheWay NoviceFor now...
-
I don't have any time to waste with prayer and God. it would take away from my time helping people. You're not changing my mind on this stance. Ever.
-
JesusIsTheWay NoviceHhmm okay then but Jesus loves you and I'm not going to stop telling you about Christ.
-
Haiti was in the worst case. It had a earthquake than there was some hurricane to them last year. .-.
-
JesusIsTheWay NoviceExcuse me?

@JesusIsTheWay Listen, people are going to have their own opinions. Christians (and other theists) get aggravated when atheists ridicule them for having a religion. Atheists get aggravated when they're ridiculed for not having a religion. Apatheists get aggravated when they're told they have to pay attention to God (who is probably forgiving enough to forgive those who did not follow Him during their lives). Agnostics get aggravated when they're told they have to pick a side. Everyone is different. Everyone is going to believe what they want to believe, and there's nothing you can do about it. Most of the time, the more you press something the less someone will want to do it. When the time comes for judgement, everyone will be judged on their own person, no one else. If God is as merciful as people say He is, then won't He forgive those who are good but don't believe in Him? Whether He will or not, that is between the individual person and God.
-
@Jesusistheway it's funny because the more you bug me about Jesus, the more I dislike the whole concept of christianity because it breeds annoying people like you. Some people have already made up their minds and frankly I'd rather go to hell than deal with the likes of you.
-
You don't need god to be a better person.
-
not to discredit what you do, but just for the sake of argument, does being a good-Samaritan necessarily make you a good person?
Goodness can be measured by a plethora of standards, and the question at stake here isn't whether or not you are a good person, but whether or not "God's" standards are the best.
Given that (although I'm not christian at all) I could argue that "God" has already made you better, because the deeds you do, and standards you seem to hold to, are in line with the teachings of Jesus Christ, who was allegedly the messenger of "God" -
Obviously my standard of "Good" is better than God's if I'm not stoning non-virgins and gay people.
-
of course not..but if you had a stone, I have no doubt that it would be thrown at your chosen enemies.
the standard set forth that most people in the modern western world subscribe to is in fact consistent many of the morality lessons that are taught in mainstream Christianity.
To be clear: while you wouldn't stone an adulterer, you might stone a person who you considered to be evil.
The logic is not that you stone non-virgins, or diabolical ceo's, but that you stone enemies.
this because while one might not necessarily believe in "God", society is molded by the christian culture, and granted, "God" may or may not exist, "he's" already had two positive effects on you. The first being your socially productive approach, which is inherit in Christianity. While you disagree with what Christians consider productive, your methods are basically the same of average christian sentiment of your region.
The second way "God's" existence helped you was by leading you to further question believes and strengthen your own resolve. This is healthy for anyone, but more importantly, resolve in a belief that is opposing mainstream is crucial ESPECIALLY in members of the creative class such as your self.
