If someone has, let’s say ADHD, but is a complete jerk, does their mental condition excuse their behaviour? What do you guys think?
It’s a complex issue to me because it’s obviously not their fault they have this condition, but they shouldn’t be acting like a jerk, and should be getting the care they need. -
ADHD has nothing to do with being a jerk 😭 but no, mental health does not excuse bad behavior. It can help explain it and you can approach it with grace and understanding, but harming other people is not okay regardless. It's a nuanced topic though and I can understand various angles

yeah, i agree with spice lol

Me too I was just wondering what ya’ll thought bc a bunch of people I know are like ‘oH tHeY’rE aUtIsTiC sO iT’s FiNe’ which really it isn’t
-
yeah, that deffo doesn’t make it okay for a person to be an a--hole, just bc they’re mental health isn’t the best- lol
-
It can excuse certain behavior, but if they way they're treating you is affecting your own mental health then it needs to be talked about. ADHD should excuse someone being late or not seeming fully engaged in conversations, not being a jerk (it depends on the type of adhd tho lol) If it does, then it needs to be addressed.
Certain mental health disorders are different stories tho, but no matter what, their mental health doesn't excuse them from making you feel like crap. If it does, you need to communicate that. Otherwise they might just not know that what they're doing is wrong -
mental health explains bad behavior but never excuses it

Yeah, especially with anyone who struggles with reading the room and understanding cues. They may be rude, but not realize they're being rude because they don't understand that it hurts you.
There are some thought processes (ex. selfish tendencies) that can come along with disorders such as NPD or ASPD, which is not their fault but doesn't really make bad behaviours (ex. punching, kicking, hitting) okay. -
Your mental illness is not your fault, but it IS your responsibility.
-
Yes, pretty much. Handle your illness/disorder.
On the same regard, I think that should also apply to physical disorders. Just because your legs may not work does not excuse being rude
