Thread Topic: Should assisted suicide be legalized?
-
And do you think hospitalization of an attempted suicide is a morally right option?
Thoughts? -
i think assisted suicide should be legal only if the person is in their right mind, sober, and has been thinking about it for a long time
that way the person can tell you they want assistance with their complete consent and you know they're sure about it
but if the person is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, is simply upset or something like that then no, it shouldn't be legal, because they can't really consent fully
suicide all in all should be discouraged but if you absolutely can not change the persons mind no matter what, then it can't be helped
and doctors shouldn't be arrested for helping people who are terribly sick and are gonna die anyway -
THIS IS LITERALLY OUR TOPIC FOR DEBATE RN
Okay, so, this is a very difficult thing to debate because there is so much morality and technicality behind it and everything of that sort. There are three types of Euthanasia: voluntary, involuntary, and PAS (Physician assisted suicide).
Voluntary Euthanasia is where the person has made the decision that they are in too much pain and that they wish to die. Keep in mind, this can only be done when the patient has been diagnosed with a terminal illness and has been given less than six months to live; in other words they're going to die either way, this is just giving them the option of ending it sooner and on a less painful note. This is usually done with a lethal injection, much similar to the painless killing done on death row. (keep in mind this is just going off of the averages in America, I imagine cases are different in countries that have legalized it)
Involuntary Euthanasia is usually done when a person is unconscious, perhaps in a coma, or on life support. This decision can be made before they go into a coma or life support (i.e. they were diagnosed with a terminal illness and stated "if I ever get this bad please kill me") or can be made by members of the family of the patient. This can be done by lethal injection, or by quote on quote "pulling the plug."
PAS or physician assisted suicide is where a patient has been diagnosed with a terminal illness, has been given less than six months to live, but instead of injection, they are given a pill. They can take this pill and pass in comfort in their own home. Basically the same as voluntary Euthanasia, but less of an injection, not done in hospitals, almost a "fail safe" so to speak. They can choose not to take the pill at all if prescribed.
Over all, I personally really don't mind it. It's all based on morals and I hate it when people try to twist my opinions "oh well going back to the abortion thing" because abortion obviously has something to do with euthanasia. That's why this subject is so rough. We gladly kill wounded animals, but suddenly we decide that because its a human in pain we have the right to tell them they can or cannot peacefully decide to end their lives? Of course there is always overdosing on ibuprofen or hanging his or herself, etc. Euthanasia gives them the option to make that much more peaceful, and a lot less painless. I personally don't believe that the government should have something saying against "no, you can't have this." The involuntary euthanasia isn't really legalized, but in a sense already practiced, as people pull life support all the time, but they also technically end up dying of natural causes; but technicality.
There are no laws saying that suicide is illegal (though places such as Florida might enforce something similar to the Baker Act) so why does everyone freak out about it? The name itself scares people, but really, who is the government to decide this for someone caring that its in the better interest in the people? Lol, it's okay, they can say they really care about people while they're all on their golf courses being the crooked a--holes they are while people are legit struggling, that's fine. -
I personally wish I could be euthanized. I have to take so many meds for schizoaffective disorder that I just don't want to do anything anymore. The voices stopped, but I just have no motivation and it's really hard to work. I have a mood problem as well. It's no fun. I believe in reincarnations and I just want to start over.

It's already legal in some places. I agree with Br0wnieBunny

I mean, what madi is saying is already legal in the states that have legalized it: you can only be euthanized in the states that legalized it if you've been diagnosed with something that is guaranteed to kill you; like you've been given six months to live or something like that. You have to be terminally ill and will die anyway to be euthanized.
