You're right, you're right, I'm sorry.
I'm sorry. I freaked out.
But how can you say it doesn't hurt anyone when nearly half of all trans people kill themselves? I mean, I suppose if you were under the belief that it doesn't matter if someone else puts themselves in danger as long as it doesn't effect anyone else you might rationalize it, but seriously? We have a responsibility to protect those who can't protect themselves. This is one of those times. Trans is something you're born with, that's likely to kill you. We should be treating it, not encouraging it.
@Talent: It is a mental illness. It's not normal to think you are another gender. It's a chemical imbalance in someone's head. We've fixed it already, it's a curable illness. There's no argument you can make to say it's not a mental illness. -

I suppose that they do need help, but what type of medication do we give them? What do we do to help them? Therapy? I don't think doctors view transsexualism as an actual mental disorder which is why we don't have medicine for it out yet (unless I'm incorrectly informed). Therapy could work, but what impact does it have on them? They've established that they feel like they don't like their body, so do we talk them out of it or?? -

Rain, I can sympathize with that statement. Biologically and culturally its important to note the facts if the birds and the bees, but it honestly doesnt matter beyond realizing whats what

Well, we need to understand that this is mental illness we're talking about, so it's not as simple as simply assigning medication to someone and standing back to wait for everything to fix itself. Like all mental illnesses, proper care from a psychologist or therapist goes a long way towards setting things right.
With that said, there is evidence to suggest that hormone treatment that's more consistent with their biological gender has helped individuals to come to terms with their own body. I was speaking mainly of these examples above, but by all means they can be safely ignored. I say fixed in the same way that you can fix something like PTSD or schizophrenia, in that it's easier to cope with.
Simply changing their gender and assuming everything is fine is just as harmful as doing nothing. Coping is what we need to focus on.
Sorry this took too long, I was searching for my examples and couldn't find them again. That's probably a bad sign, but still. -
