  What I think, Peter- scratch that, what I know- is that Republicans where the badge of individualism as a ploy to distract their working-class, rural constituency from the party's economic policies that end up hurting those same voters. Hence the Democrats become the collectivists, the hippies, the elitists, whatever. Democrats aren't scott-free on economic policy, though- Clinton and the Democrats were the first people hawking "free trade", and much of the economic crisis of the moment can be traced back to Clinton's Treasury Secretary Bob Rubin and his deregulation of Wall Street. That's another reason I choose not to associate myself with the Democrats too closely.
