Thread Topic: a classic "gotcha" question

This is a question I am often asked by people who support the death penalty in an attempt by them to get me on their side of the issue. It was first asked in a presidential debate in 1988 because the candidate in question, Democrat Michael Dukakis, opposed the death penalty. Here is the question:
"If a man brutally raped and murdered your wife and daughter, would you want them to be executed?"
You have two answers to this question: (1) yes, or (2) no, and say why. (Dukakis gave a single-word "no" answer and lost public support. Hence the reason I want you to argue your point.) -
No, and my answer as to why: Founded in my beliefs, I believe that justice will be left to God and that taking his life won't make a difference. I think it'd be better for him to keep his life, and have to pay with his time and seclusion from the world. Everyone is a sinner, and I'd pray that this man someday turned from this gruesome act. I wouldn't fight fire with fire, so to speak, but fight hate with love.
Though the murder and rape of my closest confidants would crush me, I'd try to refrain from a sense of revenge. I'd want him to be punished, of course, but not in the way of death. -
That's a good answer. Unfortunately you will be ripped apart by the Christian Right for that. They neither like people who oppose the death penalty or people who claim a vision of Christianity other than their own. But good try anyway.

I would rather deal with them myself, so to say. But if I really wanted them to suffer...I would allow them to live, but without any form of dignity.

xD I don't care what 'the Christian Right' thinks. They'd also hate me for supporting gays. Doesn't change my beliefs and how I feel. :3
