Democrats - Idiots
Republicans - Idiots
Well, my opinion. :P
Basically a general definition would be that democrats are socially libertarian (meaning they are less authoritarian on social issues) but more authoritarian on economic government issues. Republicans would generally be the opposite, more authoritarian on social issues, and less on economics.
But of course there are variations in both parties. They are two main parties, so most of the independents who feel they don't really fit into either will just vote for one based on how they feel about their most important issues. There are several other parties as well, but they don't have much power it seems. ._. -
Hmm, well I'm basically right in the middle politically, so I'll take a stab at this.
Democrats- Historically progressive on civil rights, including those for blacks, women, and gays. Historically more protective of the environment. Historically in favor of economic safeguards like corporate regulation and a government-provided safety net to ensure everyone gets a fair shake. Democrats have been particularly forward in advocating universal health care in America. Historically pro-choice on abortion, though some Dems are still somewhat pro-life. Some oppose the death penalty. But most importantly... while these are all convictions of Democratic politicians, what you need to know more than anything is that in the last 30 years, the platform of the Democratic Party has rarely been effectively translated into legislation, as Democrats have become so afraid of their shadow as a result of repeated repudiations of their policies by the American people that they've decided it is best to simply roll over and play dead.
Republicans: Historically in favor of "traditional values", meaning you cannot abort a fetus, get married to someone of the same sex, learn about safe sex in health class or evolution in science class, have ready access to birth control, or die with dignity when stricken with terminal illness. You can however own guns, as many as you want, without the gov't checking to see if you're, say, criminally insane. Republicans are historically "tough on crime", which often means putting people in jail for possession of marijuana. Republicans are historically in favor of a strong military, and in recent years have become especially interested in using that military to fight wars anywhere and everywhere. Republicans historically do not favor the same economic safeguards as Democrats, nor have they been progressive on civil rights the way Democrats have been. Republicans are also generally less concerned with the environment, as protecting the environment costs the captains of industry money. Republicans are historically the party of big business, so ultimately many of their policies are concerned chiefly with maximizing the profit of industry and the wealth of those who own the means of production.
