tongue AdvancedI say no. Alot of research on the subject shows that drug testing welfare recipients would be both expensive and ineffective. It would be expensive because it costs alot of extra money to test everyone, and all the extra money spent would likely exceed the money saved because it is a small minority of people on welfare who are abusing drugs. It would be ineffective because junkies find ways of beating the system, and because the states considering doing this have said they will test those they are "suspicious of", but how does an agency figure who is a suspect?
34 states are considering drug testing welfare recipients. 2 already are doing it. These initiatives are counterintuitive, will be fiscally unsound, and are an ugly indicator of the classist and anti-poor attitudes that seem to have taken hold in this bad economy. It's basically legalized scapegoating. -
I say no. I agree with your points.
