I'm honestly not sure how to feel about people using kids in certain films. While I understand it would be more accurate, should children really be involved with that sort of thing? What are your thoughts?
-
I'd imagine the behind the scenes is probably more traumatic for kids than the movies themselves.
Tbh idk. Child actors in general are a weird, messed up thing. -
Like what are we gonna do? Get adults to play children?
I kinda feel like it really depends. As a tame example, stranger things was probably really scary for 12 year olds to film but they all seem like the show was a positive experience for them and have yet to allege anything sinister.
On the other hand I have yet to hear any former Disney channel or Nickelodeon star say anything other than that the shows were traumatic for them. -
the only thing remotely similar to that i've heard is certain directors abusing them, but that's a different matter.
-
That is an excellent question I hadn't thought of that before
I think it can work if children are spared the details. Like saying "okay now act sad" without going into gruesome detail on why their character is sad. Spare the children trauma and stress and work with them, no movie is worth ruining a little kid's life -
Depends on how old they are, and what movie. My rule of thumb is kinda that if they would be allowed to watch it they can play a role in it, but depends
-
And mint (Mintvoyager, sorry, I don’t know what you’d prefer to be called) that’s a really good point on the behind the scenes and stuff.

I think it depends. If the kid is over 10, it would be OK. Any child under 10 years of age shouldn't have big parts in movies and TV shows. Stress is bad for young children, and commitments like this can get in the way of education, family, friendships (which is really important for children) and other stuff.

@Mintvoyager
I have a show for you that reflects your opinion
Bojack Horseman -
I really don't think children should be involved in messed up themes for TV
there is a fine line and i feel like sometimes it gets crossed too often
but at the same time, since it is a fine line, it's easy to cross sometimes
i just can't wrap my head around a child having to act in certain situations. like sure you can explain to the child it's fake and it's for film, but their minds don't comprehend things the same way as an adult would. it's gotta be a whole other experience for them emotionally, one that adults can't even understand. -
I don't know that I believe child actors should be allowed to be in any kind of TV show, movie, etc.
It's child labor. I'm sure extra steps are taken to ensure the kids are being treated fairly, but in a perfect world, there would be no child actors.
As far as children being in films/shows with mature themes like horror, murder, etc, I don't think that it's a problem having children act in these settings. While it may look real to the viewer on the screen, behind the scenes there is a lot of "movie magic" that goes into making it believable. A lot of editing, camera angles, etc. The actual process of filming would not even be close to realistic enough to have a lasting negative impact on a child -
I think if a child would like a chance to star in a show then they should. If they are happy to they can audition for it and if they receive their part and it's too big or stressful for them they can opt out. Nobody should be forced to do things they don't want to do. I hate peer pressure, but that's a different matter. Going onto the actual subject. I don't think children should act in serial killer films and that kind of thing. It is traumatizing for younger years. Even some teenagers may not be able to cope. So I guess my thoughts are: if they are ready and at a stable mental age to cope with watching the show then yes they can act in it.
