Thread Topic: Er, TikTok ban proposed again?
-
I've been thinking about talking about this ever since the bill was introduced, but I thought someone else would beat me to it. Of course, I was wrong.
So basically, from what I've been hearing, the government collectively agrees with the ban on TikTok in the United States. Which is worrying, but I'm not too concerned just yet. I don't want to say anything that may be misinformation, so y'all can do your own research on it. I think that they are going to come to their final conclusion in April.
Recently, I've also been hearing that this will not only affect TikTok, but it will also affect any website/app that isn't owned by the US for "safety concerns" or whatever bulls--- they're spewing. This may affect many other apps and websites as well if this is passed.
This has happened before and it didn't go through. This time it could. All we can really do is wait and see what happens.
If you want, if you have any TikToks that you want to save (just in case), then do it now. I'm not sure how much time we have left if it does happen. Once I can, I'm going to start saving my gacha videos and posting them on my art/gacha instagram account. I've already saved my tiktoks from my personal account from the last time this happened.
Anyways, stay safe. Some links I looked at are below.

I think the US concerns about TikTok are....ill-founded for sure, but I don't think banning TikTok will be the worst thing in the world. TikTok is not good for your brain development. It's like Cocomelon for all ages. It's a drug. It shortens attention spans. It gets you addicted.
But sadly, once TikTok is gone something identical will just take its place -
Well yes, I do agree that it may be good for many different reasons. Hell, I've deleted the app before because it was hurting my mental health (ofc my phone is possessed and re-downloaded it, don't ask how lmfao). My concern is mostly rooted in the fact that Tik Tok is the reason why so many people are aware of what the government is doing in secret that isn't talked about on the big news channels/websites. I feel like they're mad about us knowing stuff so quickly after they pass laws and propose bills, mostly because information passes QUICKLY on Tik Tok due to the algorithm.
However, my biggest concern is, again, that it won't JUST Tik Tok. The bill will allow them to ban other apps/websites as well. I'm not sure which of them will be affected, though.
So no, it's not the worst thing, and we'll figure out a way to continue to pass around information on other platforms if we need to. It's kind of annoying tho, since I'm a small gacha/artist content creator who wants more people to see my work, and I use Tik Tok mainly because I'm not allowed to make a YouTube channel. I guess I can just use Instagram reels, if I want to... -
I think Tik Tok should absolutely be banned. First off it is owned by China and having it on your phone pretty much gives the Chinese government all your personal data. If you don't believe me facts check it for yourself, it's true. Second, it is bad for your brain, especially for children who use it. We are all entitled to our own opinions, and thanks for hearing me out. This is just what I think.
-
...Okay? Basically all social media apps take your personal data, not just Tik Tok. Yeah, it's bad for your brain (and mental health), I've literally just agreed with @Of Raining Skies on that.
Facebook takes the most personal data out of all social media apps. Why isn't that getting banned? Oh yeah, because the government isn't doing this to protect our personal data. -
Respectfully, I think its because Facebook is based in the U.S. unlike TikTok. You do have a point tho
-
That's most likely the reason. Sorry if I came off as rude, btw, I'm not good at showing emotion through text, and I've also just been in a terrible mood lately ;w;
Personally, I trust the owner of Tik Tok more than the owner of Facebook/Instagram, but that's just an opinion....aaaand I'm a bit biased because I just hate the US in general, considering the fact that they are f---ing with my rights simply because I'm a minority.
But let's ignore that, because I'm just constantly full of rage that is waiting to be triggered by anything that the government does lol -
I agree with everyone and thing everyone has super valid points here. I do worry about a false dichotomy being drawn to push for certain outcomes in this situation.
I guess the best thing you can do is keep (hopefully safe) information highways open, while educating people on mindfulness and practicing technology discipline.
Maybe it wouldn't be a bad thing to have something else take tiktoks place, but you couldn't pay me enough to believe the govt doesn't have some ulterior motive for passing this. -
Piggybacking off of Mint's last sentence:
They want to stop China from taking our data but not enough to pass laws that would prevent apps and websites from taking it. Because they still need that data for domestic spying. These websites are allowed to sell our data to third parties because they also sell it to the govt. Funny thing is the other places they sell it would probably end up in China's hands anyway
The thing with TikTok tho is that it is literally at the center of our culture rn. What is trendy, what is mainstream is determined by TikTok's algorithm. Is controlled by an app that has ties to the CCP. By that token I get why the US gov is s---ting its collective pants rn -
America when China: 😱😱😱😱
-
EXACTLY! xDD
The government is really having a fit over this stupid app lmaoooo
Yeah, the government's gotta be hiding something or doing this for a different reason. I'ma go ahead and bet that they're scared of us younger generations /j -
Honestly I dislike tiktok, but for personal reasons. Last year there was this account that had (my school name).8thgrader. This account had been created to bully other in my school, including me and my best friend, one video describing my friend as a furry when she had worn a Wolf costume on HALLOWEEN. later, someone, who i still do not know who it was, found my Roblox account and friended me, telling me who the creator of the account was. Turns out it was this one kid from the year before who hated a lot of people and had moved, and I never thought it was him bc I thought he had forgotten about us. This year, someone brought it up and said it was also this girl who hates me to the bone. So, honestly, I don't care much if TikTok gets banned.

personally, i've never been into tiktok. if tiktok leaves, it won't be a major biggie since other things are already taking its place, such as yt shorts or other shiz
