Research is important. -
ravager, my post wasn't directed at you but ya know if you feel called out thats on you lol
all said tho i don't care for shaggy's character design in particular. i can't speak on why certain choices were made but it def doesn't seem like much thought was put into it. it is overall lacking imo. i'm not following the project though because i don't have much interest in it and probably wouldn't have watched it either way :/
it is funny cause like ANY time there is representation, people complain that it is performative. i'm not saying that is or isn't the case here, i'm just sick of hearing it and having the same conversations over and over again. doesn't matter if it's different nationalities or races, members of the lgbtq+ community, or even illness/disability rep, people complain. to the point that it makes it impossible to actually criticize poorly done representation, because there's already so much noise out there coming from the wrong places. -
Tbh I'm just tired of remakes where they change it up just a lil and then throw it out there instead of making original content :') like LOOKING AT YOU DISNEY. ENOUGH WITH THE LIVE ACTION PLEASE WE DON'T WANT TO SEE CGI FLOUNDER. HE'S GONNA BE UGLY
Personally I don't think changing the race of the character is that big of a deal but I do find it a little annoying how people would blow up if it was a racial change from black to white which is a bit of a pet peeve of mine
As long as the characters still capture the original essence (for lack of a better word), there's not really an issue. Like Hamilton for example. Is the cast historically accurate? Nope. But allowing anyone to play a character gives more options and allow talented people to audition for roles they otherwise wouldn't have gotten if there was a rigid "must be like history" rule.
People don't like it when you mess with their characters tho. And a lot of the time you can tell when directors are pandering instead of actually trying to make good and accurate representation sigh -
People of a different race than the original representing the character is fine. What isn't fine is changing the race of a character when it's culturally significant, like if they made a Scottish historical figure from the past POC. It wouldn't make sense and it'd also be disrespectful
-
I agree with Spice :)
-
I'm not trying to be rude, but if you're over here making a fuss about a cartoon man being not white in a singular rendition of a popular franchise, you sound like the sensitive one.

bruv
I just don't get why they do it
The whole redesign is just change for the sake of change.
I mean, hell, shaggy bears no resemblance to his original form aside from the shirt.
And at this point I don't even give a s--- about the skin tone, because the new shaggy design looks NOTHING like shaggy. Man looks like a stereotypical rapper, and I despise that. -
like the whole spongebob thing was kinda off topic
anyway
I refuse to believe that is shaggy.
That is a random stereotypical black rapper the director decided to say was shaggy.
He has the shirt of shaggy and that is the only resemblance. In fact, if I saw him without context, I'd think he was some random cartoon character I'd never heard of.
that is what i see when i look at this new "Shaggy" -
if you feel called out thats on you lol
I don't but
you haven't exactly been very kind to me in the past now, have you? -
I don’t care if they change a character from white to black or black to white. It’s the director’s/creator’s choice, imo. What ticks me off is, as Spice said, when people get all fussy about the skin tone of character’s being changed. It isn’t a big deal. They’re still the same characters, but with a different design. Also, as Spice also said, when it’s culturally significant and they change the race, it isn’t fine all right.
I do think that the creator who made whatever the show is should have the ideas taken to them before whoever is directing the show changes the character since the creator was the one who created the characters. -
Have you seen what was shown?
The new """Shaggy""" looks nothing like the original. That's the biggest issue.
It's also implied that he has a completely different personality. The only things connecting hin to Shaggy are the shirt and being named "Norville".
His skin tone means basically nothing at this point. He looks NOTHING like the original Shaggy.
He looks like a stereotypical rapper.
I feel like if I saw the new "Shaggy" at a bus stop, he'd ask me if I'd like to buy his new album. -
what about him screams rapper to you, ravager, enough that you would have said it three times? cause i'm looking at the character design and i'm not seeing it.
also yeah no i'm not usually kind or tolerant of bigots :) sorry not sorry. -
I absolutely do not want this to seem like I'm attacking you because tbh I think everyone's entitled to their own opinion. I think you deserve to be able to express your opinions & also that they deserve to be seriously considered.
I do,hhowever,I do want you to really consider why you immediately associate a black person with "stereotypical rapper."
I'm not saying I see it this way but I encourage you to ask yourself if that idea comes from any sort of generalization bias or if there's something specific about the character design that you can relate to rapper culture other than the fact that he's black. -
Again I'm not trying to single you out. I hope you don't feel like we don't take you seriously in debates. I genuinely enjoy hearing your opinion, I just also like to encourage people to justify their rational logically. Don't think of it like I'm saying your opinion is wrong, more just that I am having a hard time understanding your reasoning and would appreciate further clarification.

Just something about the design... the way he's looking forward, his hair... idk he just gives stereotypical soundcloud rapper vibes
