So you literally can't go anywhere or read anything without hearing about the corona virus. Schools are closing, businesses are losing millions of dollars, and people are fighting over toilet paper. Yet despite the serious problem and frightening spread of the virus, significantly more people die from the flu every year. So my question is: How dangerous do you think the corona virus is? Do you think it is more dangerous than the effects of fear and regulations are having on our economy? Are all these restrictions worth it in the long run? What do you think?

Nothing is as bad as they're saying it is.
-
you can't tell if more people die from flu if we haven't had it for a year yet
-
So far it's been the flu.

COVID-19 is worse than flu because of various reasons though. Itd be pretty dumb if we consider only the deaths.
First, flu has treatments. Coronavirus doesnt have any publicly available drugs as of yet. Israel seems to have found one but it's not available to the rest of the world right now.
Secondly, the reproduction value of Corona is more than that of flu. It is 2-2.5 for Corona and 1.7 for flu.
To counter the argument that flu kills more people, the death rate of flu is 0.1% (34 million cases and 34000 deaths), while that of COVID-19 is 3.5% (729 cases in the US and 29 deaths). Also, we don't take much precautions for seasonal flu but for corona the entire world is shutting down. Even after that, the amount of deaths caused by corona (in percentage) is more than that of flu. If we treat corona like normal flu, then the death rate might shoot up to 50% and the cases may outnumber flu's.
So I think the restrictions are necessary. Perhaps it might be too much in your country, but in mine it is very much necessary. If the restrictions are removed in hopes of a stable economy, in the long run many people might die. If we do not stop the spread of corona, it might evolve into something even more dangerous. If that happens, I wont be surprised if the entire world's economy is permanently damaged. -
Is this how they were when the flu came out? Shutting everything down and putting a million restrictions on everything?
-
Isnt even required lol flu is usually self treatable
-
U got it all whizwammed... they are considerably interlinked

@ dragon
Youre on the right track. Though it depends on which flu you refering to of course.... i forgot which but one instance of a virus, Philadelpia did not isolate their people and let public events go on, leading to a dangerously high spike. One other state, in comparison, took safety measures and because of it created for themselves a flat line.
@Jeeshan Depends on factors and may I remind u of Spanish influenza? That took a toll and needed an array of precautions -
yeah that was deadly took 500m people's lives.

AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!

The CORONAVIRUS is a virus that that spreads not through air but from droplets of water and liquids. But COVID-19 is a new disease and we are still learning how it spreads, the severity of illness it causes, and to what extent it may spread in the United States. ... Through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. the virus strain is severe acute respiratory syndrome; coronavirus 2 (SARS-COv-2)
It gets it's name, corona, from the Latin word for crown. The shape of the bacteria was shaped similar to that of a crown. Our virus, COVID-19, corona virus disease 2019, discovered on december 1, 2019, is the one going around, the CORONAVIRUS is just a category of viruses, discovered in 2006, and this virus is a very strange virus unlike others, like the SPANISH FLU. this is why doctors are studying the Spanish flu. It happened in 1920, coming back with a WWI soldier, that was coming back from fighting in Europe, and when he was feeling symptoms, they left him alone in a room for a while, but it spread through the army base. Now they didn't have vaccines and medicines for the flu, so it spread quickly. 1,456 soldiers got it, and 45 died from it.
So schools closed, ETC. thats why doctors in our times are studying the Spanish flu.
there are 64,000 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, and 2,000 people have died, and the rest are being treated as you speak. As the coronavirus spreads, researchers and startups are using artificial intelligence and ... infectious diseases may appear next (air routes, after all, are a common disease vector). -
Amid rising cases of COVID-19 in Canada and around the world, experts say there are still key unanswered questions about the virus and how it works.
Globally, the number of confirmed cases has climbed to more than 116,000 — including at least 93 cases in Canada — with 4,000 deaths, according to the latest figures.
On Monday, B.C. Provincial Medical Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry announced the country’s first death related to COVID-19 after a man in his 80s with pre-existing health conditions died from the virus at the Lynn Valley Care Centre in North Vancouver.
Another person from the nursing home also tested positive for the virus. -
Economic collapse is a much larger threat than Covid-19
Take for example famine and hunger, they kill a lot of people yearly but no one batters an eye.
The moment Covid-19 starts knocking out rich and popular people, everyone panics because now they have all that big fat bank account and nothing is saving them from this virus.
The reason the virus is causing a stir is because of how contagious it is. It spreads very very easily and we have no knowledge and cures for it till date.
Because of this, governments have taken extensive measures to reduce its spread, resulting in nation wide lockdowns.
Problem with this is that it completely shuts down the economy of a country resulting in poverty, crime and corruption.
So either way, Covid-19 has simply sped up the process that the world was already in, we were already heading for a world recession and now we are in it sooner than expected.
