Check your privilege is probably by far one of the most popular phrases coined to Social Justice Warriors. It's almost become synonymous with SJW and I'm confident that anyone who has ever participated in a debate has heard (or used) this line at some point or another.
But why is it so popular?
In reality, "Check your privilege" is a perfect marriage of all 7 of the master suppression techniques. These techniques were first coined by Norwegian psychologist and philosopher Ingjald Nissen in 1945. These are strategies of social manipulation by which a dominant group maintains such a position.
1. Making invisible, by marginalizing the opinions of a 'privileged' person.
2. Ridicule, by making fun of the 'privileged' person.
3. Withholding information, by intentionally not defining what 'privilege' means (and changing the definition when convenient)
4. Double bind, because 'check your privilege' is neither an affirmation nor a negation, meaning that it can follow any statement and condemn someone regardless of the answer they give.
5. Heap blame/put shame, because it shames the 'privileged'.
6. Objectifying, because 'privileged' usually means white, even though being white has almost nothing to do with any discussion, ever.
7. Threat of force, because the logical extension is 'check your privilege or else'.
Thus it's a composition of all of the established Master Suppression Techniques, which is why SJW love it so much. They aren't Justice Warriors, they're oppressors with a victim complex and a mob mentality. -
Would "check your bias" be a better phrase? That's what it means, really. "Your specific set of experiences is interfering with your perception of this event, and you need to acknowledge that."

Sorry. Rephrasing it is just polishing s---. -
Some people use it as a way to shame, but really, having privilege isn't anything to be ashamed of. It's just that those with privilege (which just about everyone has some in some way, and will run into a situation in which they are privileged and others are not) need to know when their experiences are different than those without.
There really are plenty of douchebags out there that think it should be used for shaming when that's really not the purpose.
Just because you're "privileged" doesn't mean you have no place in the discussion. And it doesn't mean you've never struggled at all. Hell, you could be privileged one way (like maybe you're male) and not privileged another way (like maybe you're black).
From first comment.
(Original post)so obviously I can't fight for social justice as I already have it and then some.

"Uh, yes you can. You might be a bit privileged, but you can still fight for social justice. Acknowledge that you're privileged, try to understand and work with that idea, and it doesn't have to be a problem. Support people who are/have been less privileged than yourself - it's easy, and it's a very good thing to do." -
Your example was of someone telling themselves to check their privilege. I'm not really sure what you're getting at. Your argument seems to be somewhere between #notallSJW and "it's okay as long as you join us."
No matter how you slice it, it's belittling and marginalizing. Not a very good "catch phrase" for the group that claims equality, love, and tolerance. -
What would you suggest? As far as catch phrases go.

You really don't want my answer to that question.

I do

Well unless the majority of people are terrible, i cant say the ones who use this particular attack are any more evil than anyone else. Its a world full of bullies, and your either dumb enough to run with the rest or smart enough that you have to get over your own whining and figure out how to take a stand for your own ideals.
Not implying anyone here belongs to eithr category of bullies or such of course -
It comes down to this: every second spent begruding another creed/class/race of peoples for the oppression they put on you, is a second that you arent working to better yourself.
Now to be clear, there comes a time where oppression is valid enough that its reasonable to take organized, violent action against the oppressors. In this case however, there is no whining. There is only acknowledgement of the events leading up to rebellion, and strategy involved.
For my part, the more people who moan and piss their life away, the fewer i have to go through to achieve my goals. So by all means..blacks, whites, men women, anyone who wants to tell me how much privilege ive been handed or how little i deserve, let them say it. It doesnt me, it hurts them. And im quite frankly tired of explaining things to individuals of lesser intelligence -
"And I'm quite frankly tired of explaining things to individuals of lesser intelligence."
Sometimes, I feel the same way. -
Im sure anyone whos cared about the greater good then realized life is the way it is for a reason could say that
-
Tony, sometimes you can be so head-strong and set in your ways that it's painful to read. Other times you can be completely reasonable and have decent points. And sometimes you're a little bit of both.
With that being said, you kinda started to ramble in your rant. You went from "most people aren't terrible" to "take a stand for your ideals." Eventually I think you started ranting about "better yourself instead of complaining about oppression." to "fight back against oppression with violence." And then you went in to your own personal creed of how to deal with people who... mention privilege? I think?
quite frankly you lost me. -
XD haha that was a ramble wasnt it.
Man..sometimes it just builds up and im touching surfaces of one thing or another and before i know it, it all just comes out mixed together without a real point.
So many things to argue about...so little time to argue. -
I should just write a book or something. Then you guys would have to hear less of me xD
