  ^As far as that goes I think there is a failure on our government's part to realize that innovation leads to growth. Periods of economic growth generally occur when new industries thrive. In the early post-WWII years, anything related to the military was a growth industry. In the 1990s it was anything related to computers. The big growth industry right now is alternative energy, but I don't think the government is investing nearly enough money in it, and the government still gives away a lot of subsidies to oil and coal, both of which are dying industries, especially coal. Progress leads to growth, it is that simple.
