"What was your dad like?"She asked.
-
He smiled sadly. "He was so easygoing and understanding. You could have murdered a guy and as long as you had a valid reason he'd sympathize towards you. He was so trustworthy and he always knew how to make you laugh. You could be the saddest person on the planet and by the time he was done with you, you would be the happiest. He had this way of... bringing out the best in people." He paused, taking a step forward with the line. "He was so brave and strong and courageous... I wish I could be more like he was."
-
She nodded, sympathy in her eyes.
-
He let out a ragged sigh. "Back then, I believed in God and angels and all that s---... He was deployed into a combat zone. Every day I prayed that he would come back home, every f---ing day..." He took another step forward. "When I was about seven or eight we heard about a helicopter crashing just outside of where he was stationed. It was on its way to the airport to take the passengers home. Nobody survived the crash. I prayed and prayed and prayed that it wasn't him; that he would have been safe, maybe he'd missed his flight or something." He shut his eyes, clenching his teeth. "A day later they found his dog tag amidst the ashes from the explosion. That's when I stopped believing." Aden shook his head, his voice bitter with hatred as he stated the last sentence.
-
"Maybe you prayed to the wrong thing."She said, then blushed, realizing she shouldn't have said that at all.
-
He glanced up, an expression of confusion on his face. "What else was there to pray to?"
-
"Um, well, I mean, God rules over angels. And who's to say angel's really help humanity?"She said quickly, trying to give as little info as possible.
-
"So you're saying some other type of power might help? Like Satan?" He was genuinely interested.
-
"No..not necisarrily. Maybe the demons work on their own..under a council."She said.
-
"Hm. That's interesting." He furrowed his brow, pondering the new information. He was so involved that he didn't notice that it was their turn to order.
-
"It's just an idea though. I heard about it from..a friend"She said, Ezma's face lighting up in her mind.
-
"Your friend's very insightful," he mused. The person behind the counter cleared their throat. "Oh, right. Sorry about that," Aden said, scanning over the menu. "I'll just get a burger and fries." He turned to Elicia. "What'll you have?"
