1) We celebrate Leap Year because it actually takes us 365 1/4 days to rotate around the sun. These extra hours totaled up over four years equal 24 hours, so we add an extra day to stay on track with the sun.
2) If we didn't have Leap Day we could be spending Christmas in July!
3) In fifth century Ireland, women were not allowed to propse to men. St. Bridget complained about this to St. Patrick, and he made a rule that on this day women could be allowed to propose to men.
4) Men who declined the proposal could be fined!
5) More marriages happen on this day than the daily average in the U.S.
6) Leap Year babies are made to wait until March 1st to get their license, vote, etc.
7) Julius Ceasar is credited for adding a Leap Year into the Julian calendar in 46 B.C.
8) Ceasar was off by 11 minutes and the glitch was fixed by Pope Gregory XIII.
9) When Sweden tried reverting to the modern-day Gregorian calendar from the Julian canlendar in 1700's, their plan went awry and they had to add two extra days in order to go back to the Julian calendar, the 29th and 30th!
10) Scottish farmers thought Leap Day was bad for Mother Nature, that the seasons would get all messed, have lower crop yields, and sicken livestock.
11) Babies born on Leap Day are called "Leaplings" or "Leapers."
