Responding and answering are completely different, yet alike.
It could be synonomous, or not. In this case, it is.
CG said that she was mad, therefore I thought she would prefer the company of the mad instead of the sane. I gave a short, happy dialogue, she responded and I answered.
It went back and forth. You're starting to sound mad. -
