Yesterday I found out that an actual quadroplex locomotive was built

Indeed. Only one was ever built. And holy schieße, it was a monstrous beast! TWO boilers were required to power the bloody thing! They wanted to use one non articulating boiler, but in engineering terms, this sort of technique is called "Asking For Trouble". And get this: They had plans for a QUINTUPLEX.
