Okay it seems that everybody here was under the age of 15 whenever they got their first smartphone except for me. I believe I was 17. Thanks for the feedback though kind of doing a rough study on how technology has affected the upbringing of people and it seems one of my points so far have pretty high luck on being right. I would ask another question but it gets relatively personal so I'll refrain from it.
So here's one that's a bit harder to answer. What's the youngest y'all were at whenever you got access to the internet on a normal basis? -
Probably sometime before 11
-
What was the other question I’m curious
-
It was
How many people struggle with some general mental illness of this century
But I'm in no place to ask that and that would be rude even if it was for research purposes. -
12
Covid started after my birthday
6th grade
And I technically joined Q in the spring and GTQ in the fall of 7th grade
So it had to be 12 -
Uhhhh, I got on my mom's iPad regularly 6 years ago (around the time I got Roblox), so 8.
-
alright
bumping for updates for the second question -
7
Dad's phone -
I was 15... i am 15 now
-
I'm not exactly sure how to answer that.
When I was in 4th grade (9 yrs old), we started using chromebooks at school, but it wasn't for very much, only if we had to write an essay or something.
But I think when my parents stopped caring about me asking if I could use the computer was 7th grade. I started using the computer a lot more once I figured that out.
So I'd say 7th grade, when I was 12. -
Oh gosh I was so sheltered. I got my first phone at 17, but probably had access to the internet around 15-16.
-
I got my first iPad when I was 8 or 9 but it was monitored by my mom and I would give it back to her at the end of each day. I kept it for a while but some weeks or a month after, my mom lost the charger for it but I'm pretty sure the charger is somewhere in her bedroom.
But I did get my phone at the age of 12 -
12

I was allowed on the internet at like 5 or 6 but it was supervised. Dad would play Build A Bear village with me. At like 8 is when I would play Poptropica and be introduced to YouTube. I got unsupervised access at 11 via my DSi but my parents didn't know.
However, relating to mental illness, I was born with OCD, and got CPTSD through my childhood, neither of which is related to my internet usage -
14, before that I had an iPod touch that I bought myself and a flip phone (that I got when I was 11).
I think I started having regular internet access when I was 9? I attended after school childcare and we were allowed to use the computer lab a few times a week, so we'd all get on Club Penguin together.
I'm not going to disclose the specifics of my mental health, but can tell you that what I'm currently dealing with were there way before I had internet or phone access. If anything, having access to the internet to research coping strategies and meet others going through the same thing (I've been part of therapy groups online in the last few years) has been incredibly helpful. Just depends on how you go about it.
