I'm uncertain and probably won't attempt this for a while, since I'm poor, but any tips or tricks I should know before I do? I don't know anyone who cosplays so any advice would be helpful.

FELLOW BROKE COSPLAYER AT YOUR SERVICE.
Make sure you have the money to do this, or ask your parents/guardians to help you with making it.
It's also best to politely ask your family members and friends to get you money for your birthday or Christmas (STATE WHY, OR IT MAY NOT GO AS PLANNED LOL).
I also personally use pieces from my closet to help me with my cosplays, since it was already bought by my parents.
Makeup is key to looking like the actual character. You need to also make sure you have a specific character in mind before making them into a cosplay. Bad mistake on my end when I tried to make two cosplays at once and gave up in the end.
FIND. THE. CHEAPEST. ITEMS.
AND DON'T GO OVERBOARD. PLEASE Xd
Your money won't do so well if you go overboard.
