I do, in fact, think "following directions" is a valid defense
especially when you live in an oppressive dictatorship that may kill you and your family if you don't do what you're told to do
besides, they were brainwashed
so yes, I think "following directions" was a completely valid defense for Nazi soldiers. -
...Or a valid excuse to hate for no reason...
-
explain??

if you're raised most of your life to believe a certain thing, you're gonna go with that
they were basically led to believe that Jews were not even human, that they were evil creatures
look, what happened was very tragic and I am not saying that they shouldn't have held any accountability for their actions
but it isn incredibly narrow-minded to assume that every Nazi soldier was inherently evil, that just isn't reality
it is so, so, so easy to dehumanize Nazi soldiers and to dehumanize Hitler but they were people, just like you and me and everyone around us
it could have happened to anyone
people are different, but we're also very much the same in many ways -
^I second that
-
you also have to consider what the soldiers themselves had to go through, and that it likely ruined them psychologically
I am not minimizing what the Jews went through, I am not trying to make it look like Hitler was right or anything
I am simply saying that the issue of Nazi soldiers is not as black and white as everyone wants it to be
you have to consider all of the factors -
I was thinking about this because yesterday, the student teacher asked if "I was following orders" was a valid defense for the Nazis and the response was overwhelmingly "no".
I'm too shy to say anything out loud but I kept thinking about it and I wanted to share my opinion somewhere -
Fear is a great weapon

it certainly is effective

Is it a valid excuse?
In this case, yes it is. Hitler rose to power because of back handed deals and clawed his way up to the top, illegally. He never deserved to be in power. Most Germans were afraid to stand up or say anything to Hitler, so they went along with it. I think as they progressed though, something in their minds changed to where they thought this was okay. When the mind is under pressure, or stress, it tends to rewire itself. The Germans were living in just as much fear as the Jews were. What happened to the Jews was devastating, and yes, it is worse than what happened to the Jews. Even then, I think the Germans who lived under the reign of Hitler should get sympathy, because if they didn't go with what they were told, they could've been easily sent to a concentration camp as well. I think the reason why they weren't is because they chose to live and follow his rules instead. Plus, Hitler was trying to create a super race, and honestly, I believe some people were brainwashed to believe whatever Hitler wanted them to.
Just my opinion. Sorry for interrupting. -
