for malik, it was listening to himself, and the realization that just because he was raised to believe a certain thing, that doesn't make it right, and sometimes the person you have to stand up to is yourself, and you have to let yourself make mistakes and be wrong and still be able to love yourself and forgive yourself because otherwise, you're just going to fall apart.
and also that forgiving yourself, that letting go of your mistakes doesn't have to mean ignoring them, it just means you can only torture yourself over them for so long before you move on -
jade learned that sometimes love can be a weapon and it's okay to be hurt by people and to not forgive them, and it's okay to not agree with even those closest to you, and if you have to protect yourself then you do. it. and you don't have to move on until you're ready, because otherwise you won't really be moving on at all.

And Serai
Serai learned that sometimes the world is big and scary and there will always be things and people that you don't understand, narratives that you've never heard. And just because you feel weak and powerless doesn't give you an excuse to run away, and sometimes you don't get to pick your part in everyone else's narrative. To some you might be the enemy or the sidekick, the love interest or the foil, or you might fall somewhere else. That you don't even have to be your own hero but you can and sometimes you should be. That it's alright to trust others and it's okay to be angry at the world as long as you don't let it destroy you.
And he learns that it's okay to break from your own narrative and write a different one for yourself.
and ultimately he learns not to be a passive character in his own life, to not let things happen to him but make them happen because of him, and he learns how his parents don't define him. -

in which a poet falls in love with a soldier after accidentally receiving letters meant for his wife
The poet writes him back, posing as the soldier's wife, but only because he knows that the wife is having an affair
Just a random idea for a series of letters -
Does that fact that other people have thoughts as deep and as intricate as yours trip you out sometimes
