Women originally dressed up like men in order to be able to court other women without arousing suspicion from the public. These women commonly used the alias Tom when asked. This led to the modern tomboy. While in most of civilized society women can love each other without having to dress up as men, girls typically still act as tomboys as kids as an attempt to suppress their homosexual instincts, even if they aren't open about them with family and friends or even fully aware of them theirselves.
