I got more music for the Christmas concert, and this piece is so difficult to me because of the accidentals and the rhythm. I just stared at it when it was handed out and nervously laughed and shifted around in my chair. Horns up. Play.
Me: trouble breathing because aNXIETY
Me: loses place
Band: finishes piece
Pack up.
Me to teacher: I need help with this tomorrow.
Teacher: laughs in my face
Me: slowly dies and crys inside -
I would try to help you, but a message board is kind of hard to do that on...
-
My face got red, and my palms got sweaty. My breathing felt restricted. My mind went blank, so I just hid behind the stand.
-
I thought it was one page, but the girl I share a stand with moved the sheet music. There was another page. I just awkwardly laughed and cried inside.

- Teacher is a dick
- Practice slow, one measure at a time
- Idk, I suck at advice -
The first few measures are simple. The first measure is a half rest and a half note. The next few measures are just simple quarter notes. You count the rests then repeat because there's a repeat symbol. Then there's accidentals and eighth notes thrown in with the quarter notes and half notes, and it throws me off.
-
Accidentals are so annoying. If you have a metronome, maybe start really slow until you get the notes down, then gradually increase until you're up to tempo? I really don't know. I haven't ever played in a band before, and I'm sure it's different than the piano solos I'm used to.
-
Our trumpets are awful, and there are a few trumpet solos. They better learn. oml
I hate accidentals so much, but key signatures and cut time isn't a problem. I don't think a metronome will help since it isn't just ex: quarter notes for the entire measure. -
The time signature changes. It goes from 4/4 to 3/4, and 3/4 throws me off sometimes. 4/4 is so easy.
-
The metronome isn't so much for helping you count as to keep the tempo.
I hate those songs that change time signatures. They throw me off so bad. Some I've played change it every single measure and it's so weird. -
The general tempo is simple, but it's the exact rhythm.
Sixteenth notes are: 1 e + a
They're fast.
Eighth: 1 +
Quarter: 1
Triplets 1-2-3
Half: 1-2
Whole: 1-2-3-4
If it's dotted, which there are dotted notes in there, add half the value to it.
Ex: Dotted half notes have three beats and not two.
I just can't figure out how to put it all together and stay in tempo. -
I'll show you my rhythm of the day sheet once I get it filled in for each day of the week, graded, and given back to me.
-
If you're able to write on the music, you could just put the counting right in there.
Like on a dotted sixteenth write the "1 e +" over the first note and the "a" on the second one.
But if not, then just count out loud? (unless you're playing a wind instrument) -
I play wind, and I don't write on it unless instructed to.
-
Okay then.
Maybe figure it out on piano? I am going to shut up at some point because I'm not helping at all.
