You mentioned earlier you were muslim. Is that common in your area? And didn't india like send all the muslims off to pakistan or something? -

Yes I am a Muslim. My locality has a higher Muslim population than other religious communities. In Assam, the Hindu population is higher than Muslim - Muslim is ~32%.
India did send all Muslims off to Pakistan. It happened shortly after India got independence. All went to Pakistan but some remained here. Some converted to Muslim. Some other Muslims came to India later on. -
