"I'm breaking up with you, Ben," he said. I didn't here- I was very into my work, focusing on the placement of pieces. "Ben,"
"Yes?" I asked, absentmindedly.
"I can't do.. This anymore!" I stayed silent again, setting down my thermal paste and reaching for my screwdriver. "Ben!"
"Yes?" He reached over and tore the equipment from my hand and taking off the pieces I had just glued down. "What is this for?"
"You're neurotic! God forbid you pay me a goddamn second of your attention!"
"Well, to be honest, you're not my top priority. Christopher is. Other Christopher," -
*hear
"Are you.. Joking? Right? You value a machine more than me?" He looked at me in anger and spite, and knocked a tray of screws off the table. I jumped in my seat a little bit.
"Yes, I do. I much prefer them. Sorry," I said, lacking emotion, and leaning to pick up the tray. He grabbed my shoulder and pushed me to the ground. I struggled against him when he pinned me.
"You shouldn't fight this, Benny." -
"What's wrong, Ben?"
"Nothing," I mumbled, stirring a cup of tea. She looked me up and down - I probably looked shabby, in old pants and a pyjama set. A frown etched into her features, and she sat down across from me at the wood table. "I-I'm fine,"
"Your stutter got worse," I didn't look up at her, but stopped stirring my tea for a second.
"Quick to point out flaws, are we?" I sneered, taking a sip of the hot beverage. She reached for my hand but I withdrew all too quickly. "Jane, please, I'm fine," -
"Just... Just look at me, please?" She pleaded, and I felt pressed to comply. I met with her stunning blue eyes, examined her porcelain skin, and voluminous hair. She wore a simple dress, nothing too much, with a belt. The corners of my mouth twitched up.
"You look fabulous, today," I muttered, quickly averting my eyes back down. "But you can't match shoes with anything if your life depended on it."
She let out a giggle, and folded her hands in her lap. I uncrossed my legs and got out of my seat. I removed my robe and fished through a linen closet for clothes, looking for something to wear.
"You look thin. Do you eat the soup?" I shook my head:
"Not really, anymore. He.. He..." I stopped rummaging around and clenched my eyes shut. "H-h-he... Had ea-eaten it. Last. Eaten it last," -
I welled up, and forced myself to stare at the ground. She came up from behind and held out her hand. I hesitantly took it, and she gripped me into an unexpected hug. I stiffened for a moment, before I could bring myself to wrap my arms around her and cry into her shoulder.
"J-ja-Jane! Why di-did he.." She shushed me, running her fingers through my hair. I pulled away finally, grabbing clothes and taking a sip of tea. "Thank you,"
It was muttered, but she understood.
"May I stay? For a little bit?" I looked down to her, wiping tears from my jawline, and nodded. -
