I Miss the Days
I miss the days,
When parents knew what turn-around was,
When they didn’t arrive in the morning and the afternoon in pajamas,
When being over thirty-five with a second grader didn’t mean you were a minority,
When a twelve-year-old didn’t look more professional than some of you do,
When I didn’t think you could be from Jersey Shore or Toddlers in Tiaras.
I miss the days,
When eighth graders were incredible creatures,
When study hall was imagined as a secret laboratory behind a teacher’s desk,
When the faculty room was like another country,
When students knew the woman, who, without her raising money, parts of what they love most wouldn’t exist,
When students knew those who donated the money to the school.
I miss the days,
When we played dodge ball, not computers, in the morning,
When I could hang out with anyone I wanted,
When I hated the buddy system,
When Facebook was uncommon,
And the cool kids had MySpace.
I miss the days,
When I heard Nolan say, “Mason’s going on a date!â€
And I thought that for his brother to have a date in the fifth grade was incredible,
When I could proudly say that I was a Busy Bee Self Manager,
When private school didn’t seem so weird to me.
I miss the days,
When first and second graders weren’t cheerleaders,
Or the future prom queens.
When the boys thought girls had cooties,
When that old Evergreen was the perfect place to play pretend,
Heck, when we even played pretend in third grade!
I miss the days,
When I was younger, happier, sillier, and just, well,
FREE OF ALL THIS NOSTALGIA. SERIOUSLY. -

I miss the days,
When Frog and Toad are Friends and Captain Underpants were advanced reading,
When I wasn't sure if you had to capitalize after a comma, So I always continued with an I,
When I struggled to spell 'pop,'
When school meant coloring, counting, and playing. -
'FREE OF ALL THIS NOSTALGIA. SERIOUSLY.' is my favourite part.

When that old Evergreen was the perfect place to play pretend, was mine.
