Most people think that going to a new school means new beginnings. Well, that’s not at all how it worked for me. My parents had recently moved to a new town far from the city I spent my childhood in.
As usual for anyone starting in a new school, I was nervous. I fidgeted the whole ride there and when I got to school, my mom gave me my lunch box from the front seat and I headed for the office.
The secretary gave me my schedule, locker combination, and locker number. I frowned, reading the number quickly. “Locker number 999 and combination 60, 16, 6?” I mumbled, frowning. “Well, maybe these kids know where this is.” I said quietly, spotting a small group of kids to the right of the office.
Cautiously, I came up to them. “Hi! Sorry for interrupting, but I’m new.” I said, trying to feign happiness. “Do any of you know where locker 999 is?”
One of the girls screamed. “Locker 999?!” Various other cries of shock and fear rippled through the small group before one boy took my arm and led me to a set of stairs. “This is the first floor.” He said. “Down there is the basement. Locker 999 is down there.”
I nodded, thanking him, but before I went downstairs he added something else. “Just be careful. Everyone else who had this locker disappeared somehow. Kidnapped, or died. Just be careful, man.” He said, a worried look on his face.
I nodded, making it look like I believed him. I turned and went down the stairs, glancing around for the locker. I finally spotted it in the dim light and went over to it, spinning the combination until I heard it click. I opened it and put both my lunch box and my coat inside.
As I walked towards the elevator, I turned around and punched in the number. “3rd floor.” I said quietly. As the doors started to close, I saw a tall black figure approach my locker. It spun the combination and opened the locker. It reached in but looked up at the elevator. The doors closed and the last thing I remember seeing was its eyes. An odd swirling red.
I frowned, but managed to stumble off the elevator when it reached the third floor. I shook off my daze, running towards my English class.
By lunch, everyone knew about me and my locker. I’ve heard plenty of rumors. -
