[b]Chapter One[/i]
Vanessa carefully stepped through the living room, in the dark it's difficult to navigate through all the useless items occupying space; random knickknacks here and there, pictures of her and twin brother, Levi. Stopping to stare at the one photo that tugged at her heart; Levi, Sawyer, Alexx, and her mom at the beach. Before Sawyer was sent to Military School, before Alexx tried to kill himself, before Levi took it as his personal duty to sleep with every girl willing to, before her mother started doing drugs again, and before this world went to s---. -
Vanessa felt her eyes start to water, and pushed my memory into the back of her mind. Focusing on the mission at the moment, she continued to guide herself in the direction of the staircase. Finally finding the stairs, she took a step, with a loud "creak" of the step she jumped back, knocking over a stool by the bar.
Landing firmly onto her back. Wincing at the impact, but remembering the noise she just made. Not moving a muscle, waiting to hear a sign that she woken someone up. After two minutes of complete utter silence, Vanessa finally let go of the breath she was holding.
Standing up, making it difficult with the pain in her back, she finally succeeded. Skipping the first step, Vanessa carefully tested the next one, before giving it all of her weight. She continued to do this technique until she reached the top. Quickly walking down the hallway, passing by pictures, not giving in at the mockery of the photos, she stayed persistent until she could grasp her doorknob.
After carefully opening the door, following with a quiet "creak." Vanessa untied her shoes, leaving them at the doorway to her darkened bedroom. Turning on the light, and throwing herself on the bed with exhaustion. Vanessa pushed her blankets back, crawling underneath the warmth of her comforter.
Vanessa reached over to her lamp, turning off the light with hopes of resting her eyes for at least a few hours. Cuddling up to the comforter, Vanessa felt her eyelids grow heavier and heavier by the minute. But her body refused to go into the oblivion she needed. Sitting back up, turning back on the lamp once more. She quickly stalked over to her closet and picked up the letter Sawyer sent to her before was sent away.
Dear Nessie, You know I do not have a choice in this situation. And if I did, I would stay here with you. Even though you don't return my love, I will love you until I pass, and them some. You were there for me, when I needed you the most. When I felt like I couldn't go on any longer, you were there. I cannot repay anything to you. I know I am breaking your heart, but I love you. I 'll love you until I can't no more. No words can explain my love. You never returned it, I won't badger you, or persuade you into it. I know you'll move on, but to be honest, I won't. I will never. Just remember I love you. And anyone who loves you more than me, well I would like to meet that person some day. So I know for sure if they are good enough for my Nessie.
I love you.
Forever & Always, Sawyer Laythan Brecken -
Vanessa's eyes watered. She quickly wiped the tears away, moving the letter so it wouldn't get stained. Vanessa grabbed a piece of paper and a pen and started to write.
"Life's unfair. Life is.....this world is too f---ed up to comprehend. I'm sick of trying to figure out every maze, trick, and riddle it comes to show. This world have taken everything away I have cared about. Every single thing. What if there was a different world? One where this one didn't exist? What if somehow the world ended and everyone finally came to their senses? What if the world ended?" Vanessa stopped writing and pulled out the medicine she stole from her mother, and the vodka she raided from the liquor cabinet.
"Yeah, what if the world ended?" Vanessa took off the caps and shoved the pills into her mouth, following with the chaser. "What if the world ended?" -
Chapter 2
"....Nessie! Please!" her twin brother's cries woke her out of her slumber but she couldn't bear to look at him. "Nessie, please wake up. Please." Levi continued to plead and plead, but Vanessa couldn't make the effort.
Vanessa closed off her hearing by pretending she still deep in her sleep, accidentally rolling over where her hands are next to her ears, she plugged them. She continued the procedure for quite a while, but even through the pleads of Levi, Vanessa heard the familiar clicks of her mother's heals storming down the hallway. -
Vanessa quickly shot up and threw her blankets off of her. She planned to take safety in the bathroom before Cassandra walks through the door. But of course, she acted too late. Instead of being able to see the artfully crafted maple wood, her eyes land upon the killing gaze.
"What the hell do you think you're doing, Vanessa? Clearly not planning to run away from me again, are you? That wouldn't be a smart idea. Remember last time?" Cassandra's silky voice sends goosebumps to form on Vanessa's arms.
"O-O-Of c-course not. I needed to pee." Vanessa stuttered, but managed to pull off the lie, however still seeing traces of suspicion in her mother's eyes. -
Cassandra looked into her eyes once more than gave the look allowing her access,"Go. Quickly. Then come back. We need to speak of why we are....here.Again."
Vanessa nodded and quickly walked into the bathroom, shutting it behind her, locking it as well. Vanessa still couldn't get over the look Cassandra gave her when she said she "needed to pee." Vanessa questioned why they "needed to speak of why we are here." Cassandra was never interested in why they end up in hospitals. End up emergency rooms. All she ever questioned was, was she going to be charged for this. Nothing ever consisting of her actually wanting to know the reason why.
But why now? What's so special about this time? Why does she want to? Why do we need to? Vanessa questioned as she walked back into her room. But instead of two people before her eyes, there's three. -
Vanessa looked between her mother and the lawyer in disbelief,"You've been mistaken. You've sadly mistaken, sir. I'm her child!" Vanessa raises her voice. "I'm her child! I'm not adopted!"
Vanessa looked at Cassandra, expecting to see a face of pure evil, and that's what she received, "What did you do? Did you set him up to this? Use my savings so you can play this charade? This isn't true! Levi's my brother." The man showed my the paper where he listed off the percentage that shows if Cassandra is my biological mother. Vanessa accepted the paper, but attempted to look around the bold numbers glaring at her. But her attempts her wasted, before her was a bold black 0 following with the percentage sign.
Levi walked up behind Vanessa and caught her before she fell to the floor. Levi wrapped his arms around Vanessa and let her sob. Vanessa shook in his arms, crumpling the lying paper.
Throughout the time, Levi whispered encouragements in her ear, telling her no DNA test was going to deny that they were brother and sister. That even if it wasn't blood, they were with each other their whole lives and that's all that matters. But Vanessa knew the truth. She knew that after this, they won't be together. Cassandra has custidoy of Vanessa, Cassandra could leave her on the streets. She is an orphan anyway. A grown one. Who would want an orphan? Adopt a almost full grown orphan with problems? Vanessa knew the truth, but she didn't dwell on it enough for Levi to notice. But secretly in the back of her mind, she was already unfolding a plan to when it's time. -
"Vanessa, get off my son. Get your ass up. It's time to go." Cassandra grabbed Vanessa's arm, her grip cutting off the blood flow. Levi quickly stood, but had a quizzical look on his face.
"What do you mean, 'time to go'?" Levi asked,"She's staying, right?"
Cassandra had a saddened look on her face, but there was fire in her eyes like a snake ready to pounce on their prey. "No darling. Vanessa isn't a part of our family. She won't stay with us. She isn't one of us." The words stung Vanessa, almost as bad as what she does when she's alone with her "little friend."
Vanessa felt Cassandra's pierce her, making unwanted tears form in her eyes.
Vanessa looked at Levi and nodded. She understood, but Levi didn't,"Levi...it's time. You're mother is right. I'm not a part of this family. Nor will I ever be. I can pretend to be all I want. But I will never be truly a part of this. Just give up. It's too big of a struggle. I'm sorry." Vanessa finally let her tears out as she grabbed her clothes, walked out. Letting the door shut, muffling the tears that'll haunt her at night for now on. -
Chapter 3: Levi's POV
TWO MONTHS LATER
Levi pulled her hand into his house, leading her into the kitchen.
"So you have it?" asked his Whore-of-the-Hour with her eyes glazing over. Levi knew this look in her eyes. She's already stoned out of her mind. What's wrong with getting her a little more buzzed? Levi asked himself.
"Of course I do, babe." Levi smiled at her, wrapping his arms around her waist, pulling her in for a steamy kiss.
"Good." Now it was her turn to smile.
"Babe, just go to my room. I'll get the stuff." Levi grabbed her hand and lead her onward.
"Okay, but hurry. I'm already getting there."
"Okay, baby."
After....after.....What's her name? Levi asked himself. Doesn't start with a....with a....V? An E? Well damn. Too much coke affecting my memory. Hmmm, maybe I should stop? Levi laughed to himself. Yeah right.
Levi opened the cabinet door, revealing a lone box of Oatmeal Cream Pies and a box of Twinkies. Levi selected the Oatmeal Cream Pies and dumped all of the contents onto the bar. Levi reached inside of the box, feeling for the little package he taped to the side. Perpendicular to the label on the outside.
Finally finding the baggie, Levi pulled it out. Revealing a baggie filled to the top with white powder. -
Levi carefully opened the bag, slowly dipping his finger into the top of the powder and bringing it to his mouth. He let his taste buds and his saliva dissolve the powder, turning it into a liquid. Levi swallowed the liquid, letting the fiery burn go down his throat.
"Damn, I got some good s---." Levi croaked out, after trying to remain his composure and engulfing the whole bag.
Levi walked up to the stair, passing Vanessa's room. Vanessa.... Levi thought. He looked into the alight room. Alight? Why is there something lit in there? Levi opened the door, and seen his Whore-of-the-Hour staring at the many pictures of his darling sister.
Still the same brilliant green eyes he loved gazing into. Her luminous light brown hair flowing perfectly in waves, as well with beautiful long curls. A careful tan, not too tan, but no Elmer's Glue white either. Just....perfect. As well with a spray of freckles across her face, just enough to give her face more character. Soft heart-shaped lips, the perfect color of pink. The beautiful smile that lights her face even more. Levi wanted her back desperately. Needed her. He loved her.
"Levi!" yelled his Whore-of-the-Hour,"Who is this tramp?"
Levi immediately grew furious. Tramp? Tramp! Vanessa Crassus is no tramp. He wanted to yell. And scream at her for calling his darling sister such a name. But he refrained himself. Vanessa is gone. She wanted to leave. But now she's dead.....
"T-That's m-m-my s-s-sister...Vanessa. She died two months ago." Levi said bluntly, letting the hollowness of his voice take over.
"I'm so sorry, baby. I didn't want to cause any trouble. I just wanted to make sure you weren't cheating on me. And putting up a weird shrine." she hugged him tightly. "Let's get out of your dead sister's room. I know something that'll make you feel so much better."
Levi liked the thought of that. "Oh really now. What is it?" He asked putting his Playboy face in back into play.
"It's a surprise." that's all she said as she led him into his room.
"I like surprises."
"Oh I know you do." She closed the door behind him. Looking deeply into her eyes, Levi made his move. -
Chapter 4: Vanessa's POV
Vanessa contemplated if she would enter the cafeteria or take shelter in the bathroom once again. Her stomach rumbled at the smell of the lunch lady's sloppyjoes. She wanted to run to the nearest lunch line and receive the meal, but then again, she could stay in the bathroom and avoid all human contact. She finally decided on the bathroom.
Bathroom: 15 Lunchroom: 0 she thought to herself as she changed directions and walked towards the E hallway.
Instead of taking the direct route, she made a detour. Vanessa studied all of the encouragements to eat healthy, study, to good in school, and other cheesy slogans she couldn't bring herself to read.
Vanessa turned around the corner landing herself in the upstair D hallway. She basically ran into the nearest bathroom, and secluding herself in the nearest cubicle. No matter how much money someone gave her, she swore she wouldn't go down that hallway ever again.
She still couldn't shake that feeling of that boy who looked at her. She felt as if he looked into her soul, just like Sawyer did. But Vanessa was positive it wasn't Sawyer. Sawyer has these bright emerald eyes that glows in the sunlight, however, this boy had eyes blue and clear as ice. Vanessa felt the familiar chills run down her back, as she continued to think of this occasion. The horrified look on his face as if he seen Satin himself, and look dead into his eyes. His eyes were hollow, as well with his face. Snow white hair covered this strange boy's forehead, but Vanessa still seen the scars that lay underneath it. Pale white skin looked out of place in the spray-tans of the others walking by. Vanessa examined the boy, no shoes, but tattered clothes hung on his frail stature. -
Vanessa stared at the boy in awe. She looked around to her fellow peers to see if anyone noticed the strange boy in the middle of the corridor. But no one even glanced in his direction. The outcome was bizarre. The boy, turned into Sawyer for a split second. The chills down Vanessa's back diminished. Vanessa attempted to persuade herself into thinking she was sick and needed food. But a different voice inside her head told her otherwise:
I see you Vanessa. And I know you see me.
Vanessa opened her eyes, pushing the memory out of her mind. She was panting, her hair caked onto the back of her neck. Sweat dripped down her shirt. She looked around the cubicle she occupies. The abstract tiles of the green and white---
"Green and white?" Vanessa whispered to herself."The girl's bathroom is orange and whi--. I'm in the boy's bathroom?"
Her question was quickly answered as she heard the door open, and a strangely familiar male voice announced his arrival.
"Hey Sawyer! I need to piss. Stop hogging the pissing jar." the stranger bellowed, assuming to Sawyer.
"Sawyer?" Vanessa whispered to herself.
"I'm not Marcus. You're taking up three." said Sawyer.
"Screw you, man." replied Marcus.
After the many minutes after the boys arrival, Vanessa began to grow antsy. Five minutes the bell will ring, dismissing her lunch. She really didn't want anyone seeing her leave the boy's bathroom.
The bathroom grew quite suddenly. As if the boys left. Vanessa slowly opened the stall. Before her was the bright emerald eyes. -
