Chapter One
Once, it had been a magical land, with lush emerald green fields holding the smell of spring and earth that were as far as the eye could see, and flowing rivers that were as clear as crystals and as blue as the sky, bluebells, daffodils and lillies all grew in the parks, the baks of the trees were dark brown and caked with moss, there was always an extra smell in the breeze, it always carried something calming, like it had passed by an older place before blowing here. The people were happy and lived in cottages by the woods and harvested vegetables in their gardens, the children played on the path that led in to the forest, with the leaves of the trees from above casting shadows on the path of yellow and green, the people were lucky to have such a generous royal family that tended to the poor and hungry, for they had loved them very much over the years, just for that.
Every Christmas, the king and queen would have a big fiest for all the poor people of the kingdom, they ate all kinds of foods... from stuffed turkey to pumpkin soup with loafs of garlic bread, from greek salads to roast beef with gravey, they ate and they ate and they ate...
Presents were also given out to all the poor families especially the children, all different toys wrapped up in shiny wrapping paper and colored ribbons, smiles on people's faces were always pleasant.
As the years passed and there was one Christmas Fiest after another, the queen longed to have a child of her own, to raise in to something great, so that they could rule the kingdom when their parents die. And one day, the queen was happy to announce that she was carrying a baby.
As months went by quickly, from the chilling snow of winter resting on the rooftops, to the sweet smell of spring and the scent of blooming flowers, to the blazing fire of the sun beating on the workers necks in summer, until finally, Autumn came round and the leaves turned red and began to fall, the queen gave birth to a baby boy, and she called him Adrian, after her father. He had a short snuffly nose and a brown tuft of hair, and small baby blue eyes - everything she wanted in a child.
Although alas, she couldn't see him grow, for she died a few weeks after his second birthday.
Mourning the death of his wife, the kind was saddened for many months on end and cried at night, but he did not forget his duty as a king and that he had a son to raise, he took to doing what he did best. And over the years, the prince grew in to a smart young boy with a bright smile and wise eyes. He reminded the king of his wife, which would sometimes put the king to sorrow, from missing her. The prince knew nothing about his mother and longed to know what she was like, so he took to asking people about the things she did and how she acted. He felt it unfair that his mother was dead before he could even grow.
One day, the king was was in his room, looking at his diary, covered in blue silk with a golden lock, he called his son over, for he remembered what his wifre had asked of him before she died, her soft words echoed in his head, replaying what she said over and over again.
The prince was brought over with a servant in his night clothes, for he had been ready to sleep after a long day of horse back riding and hunting geese, he approached his father's bed chamber. With it's satan cloth of the curtains and the two large windows that overlooked the calm blue sea, and a shiny cream marble floorwith a four poster bed with carvings of flower designs all over the floor boards, the bed was big enough for two, but only one person had slept in it for years.
The king's sad face looked at his son for a few moments before he gestured to him to sit beside him on the magnificent bed, he stroked his black beard as he stared at his son, who was only 13 right then, the prince felt that his father would tell him something important, to keep with him for years on end, and his premonition was correct.
The kind stroked his son's hair, and said, "Your mother told me to give you this on your eighteenth birthday, she said that it was so special that even I can't look at it,"
"But father," replied the boy in a confused voice, "You just said that mother didn't want me to see this until I am eighteen, there is still five years to go!"
"Yes, yes, I know," said the king quietly, "But you see, my dear boy, it's a lovely box with a key, inside it is a gift, and I want you to keep it with you and swear to me that you will not open it until your eighteenth birthday, because you see..." and he stopped, with tears welling in his eyes, he dabbed at them with a tissue, and turned to his son, "I...I.. am very ill, and I fear that I may be dying,"
The news hit the prince like someone threw a brick at his face, his blood went cold and a chill ran down his spine, he was so shocked, so confused, the thought of his father not bieng there anymore felt too unreal, he couldn't imagine it, and suddenly, the realization of fact turning to fiction so soon made him choke on his tears and almost stop breathing.
He didn't know what to say, a million thoughts rushing through his mind at once, there were so many things he wanted to tell his father, in the end, he just hugged him and cried on his shoulder, it felt like his whole world had come crashing down in just a few seconds, and his heart felt an ache in it, one of misery, of shock... and emptiness, eating away like a growing cavity, until it would rot away to nothing.
And indeed, it did rot, for the prince's heart had become made of stone, a cold essense surrounding it, and it would remain that way for years.

"Come..." The voice softly whispers to him in the golden forest, all around him is a twilight sky with shining stars and big, strong oak wood trees growing golden leaves that fall on to the muddy forest floor every time a gust of wind flies by, this part of this strange forest was an orchard, with rosy rope apples and soft peaches growing all around him, butterflies the color of brass and silver fluttered lightly here and there, this forest was peaceful and quiet, except for a voice calling him. "Come..."
He rode his pure white horse with it's long, silky main, and shiny ebony black hooves towards the voice, he recognized it, it sounded familiar, somwhere, in the back of his mind, he had heard it before, and as he traveled on, the sound of the rocks and dead leaves crunching under his horse's feet, and the faint sound of trees jostling in the distance, he soon realized where he had heard that voice before.
It was his mother's voice that was calling for him, she hummed a jolly tune, and then called gently again, not speaking his name, it opened his very first memory, his earliest, it was a few weeks after his second birthday, he had walked towards his mother, and her arms were outstrechted to embrace him, for she had said, "Come..." with a bright smile on her face, that was the only thing he knew about her, the way she said that one word, before death found her and swept her away to rot away under the ground in a silent grave.
He rode until he came to a road that led straight down to a cobbled path surrounded by green shrubs and blooming jolly flowers, it seems to take an eternity, and yet, seemed to reach the woman's voice in a single second. He found a lady with a kind face and berry eyes, her nose was long and her lips put on a delicate smile, her hair was a dirty blong with streaks of brown and had been tied in to a bun with a diamond tiara on her head, for she was the queen, prince Adrian's mother.
She stood there, holding a frozen smile, she didn't say anything, only looked on, with a peaceful, faraway day-dreaming look. Adrain was saddened at this, she didn't recognize him, she couldn't, she hadn't lived to see him grow. This made him so depressed that he sighed and gave her a miserable frown, before dragging his despondent soul away from her, his heart heavier than an anchor at sea, singing a silent song in the waking wind of the dream world.
He woke up. It was all a dream.
