Thread Topic: I was reading an article..

It was about a Salvadoran girl who got bullied in her school, when she was a child all the way to when she was a teen. They said things to her like "Mira, mira", "fat", "wetback", and "Ugly J-Lo".
First of all, I can't believe that some of you Americans are as ignorant to think J-Lo is Mexican. :I She's PUERTO RICAN. Shock, right? -.-
And why I said Mexican, you'll see in a bit.
This all sounds familiar, huh? :I
The sad truth is that Latinos are the most bullied ethnic race in school. 1 in 4 are bullied. Why? American media, of course. The media portrays the whole lot of us getting stepped on by Americans, and it tells to kids that this is an okay actions. Also, it says "Hey look, Mexico is the only f---ing Latino country in the whole world, therefore anyone who speaks Spanish is instantly Mexican!"
For us as Latinos, it's a problem. Latin students don't report bullying because either we think or we know that no one will do anything. And the truth is, that no one ever does anything. So there isn't much point in reporting it, right? If anything it would cause problems.
The majority of Latinos in this country have parents who work two jobs, or work long hours. Because of that they can't really talk about bullying to them.
Which makes us an easy target.
It hurts me to know this goes on. It's absolutely disgusting.
It doesn't make sense to me that all Latinos are classified as Mexican, or border hoppers. Aren't there other countries? Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Guatemala, etc? It is true then, that Americans are horrible at Geography.
Plus, the majority of Latino students in the USA were born here in the USA.
Also, to those like me that were born in another country, sometimes we do complain that we hate how we are treated in this country, and sometimes we say that we don't like the place at all. But then people go "Oh my Gawd, if you don't like it here, then why don't you move back to Mexico?? We don't your immigrant ass here!"
It's not that easy. There is so much money involved in coming back. Also, in extreme cases (this one is common in Mexico though :I) we can't go back, because we're being hunted down by a gang, person, etc.
But in more common cases, it's our parents and ourselves risk everything to come here, for supposedly a better future.
But I don't understand how here, it would be a better future. The economy here is much worse here than it is in Mexico. In Mexico we were taught much more things at school than here. Over there it is required that you learn English (yes, it's a required course back home from what I remember). Here, it is only two years of another language. There, it was like, the full course of school. 12 years I think.
Then if you didn't learn anything that year, they don't go ahead and pass you onto the next grade. They keep you in the damn same grade until you learn something.
The only reason why there are so many dropouts sometimes is that life is tough there. The kids without parents was pretty common in the 60's. They were left alone and had to work to survive. They couldn't even focus on school.
And since here in USA, Latinos are pretty much used as slaves
Okay, this went another way. Enough about Mexico and the teaching habits and life back home.
All in all, life there is just as bad as life here. I think the whole "Better future in USA" is a whole bunch of bullcrap for us, but I don't know. That's my opinion.
Back to the topic though. This is why suicides of Latino students are mainly linked to bullying. It just gets worse and worse, and no one even bothered to help.
But you know what? We're still strong people. The majority of us have gotten through bullying and been successful, or have at least made a decent life. We don't let you Americans take us down.
Latino power, b----. :I -
Racism's a bitch. -.- I can't stand watching that happen. You're right, of course.

._. Dude... ugh, I hate this world sometimes.
It's disgusting that people here treat immigrants so terribly. I may have been born in this country, but immigration is a big thing in my family as well. There are so many ignorant, unopen-minded people here it makes me sick. Why don't people realize that a human is a human no matter where they are in the world?
I have to be honest, I hate this country sometimes. The only way my parents managed not to stay dirt poor was for my dad to join the army, and gave years and years of service, and this country has some of the most ungrateful people for that too. My neighbors are small town white trash, and they dislike us simply because we're not from here.
And you know what? I could fuking care less where I'm from. I don't have a hometown. I don't have a single place I grew up and knew my whole life. Because my dad had to move and work for the military that keeps these fatass idiots safe and oblivious of anything outside their stupid little town. People wonder why I have mixed feelings about this country I was born in, but they don't realize I've seen most of it, and my 'home' is only where my parents are. It's only where my loved ones are, and the place you're from doesn't make you better than anyone else. :I
I find it so funny. I'm one of the few Gringos who can actually understand and in some ways relate to people who aren't American. I was raised not to be hateful or ignorant. (And for the record, I've always loved Geography. xD When I was just a baby, my mom would hold the map up on moving trips across the country and I'd stare at it for hours.)
*sigh* I'm sorry that you and your community have gone through this, Arisu. But like you said, you're all so strong and have persevered and done well. :3 You must take me to Durango someday, because I would really just love to see all this cool stuff in real life. *huggles* -
It's quite ignorant how every person to speak Spanish is considered Mexican. :I
The same goes for Asians. They're always assumed to be Chinese or Japanese. Those are really the only two that come to mind for people. -. -
I can relate to this very much Vege, thank you for putting this thread up.
I was born in Brazil, and there I lived for the first 10 years of my life, then my parents wanted to move, exactly what you said, to give me a better chance at education and future life.
The school system in Brazil is pretty much the same as in Mexico, they won't move you up a grade until you are ready to do so, until you achieve your target.
My dad exhausts himself 2 jobs a day, just so we can have food and comfort in our home. My mum, who never had to work outside of the home in Brazil, wakes up at 5 everyday to work, just so she is able to keep me company in the afternoon. When we first came, I had to stay home alone during that time, having to wait for my parents' arrival quite late at night.
I didn't complain, they were already doing so much for me, giving up their stable lives just so I could have one better shot at life.
The only difference, we didn't move to the US, we moved to Britain. I actually can't complain about bullying problems here, I had so much worst bullying back at home.
I think that we, as human beings, should just stop this discriminating and racist s--- and simply look at each other as equals.
We all have hearts, brains, we all breathe oxygen, have to eat to remain alive, why are we regarded as different at all?
And for the record, Spanish is absolutely not the only language spoken in South America! We have freaking Portuguese, Spanish, French, English and even Dutch, not to count all the native languages.
f--- yeah Latino power! -
Wait wait wait wait wait up.
Luna, are you saying you're Brasilian?
So then.. We have an Argentinean who was actually born from Argentina, a Brasilian, a Mexican..
OH MY GOD WE'RE THE LATIN GIANTS TRIO ONLY FEMALE VERSION- /shot
Okay, sorry. xD But amen to what you said.
Amen to the rest of you too. -
Fuck them. You don't see me going around calling you all filthy smooth-headed stickmen. Why do that? You have not a shit clue where they come from.
Talking about the people who know jackshit, not you. -
Vege: Yes that's right, I'm Brazilian xD, or 'Brasileira' in Portuguese.
Haha that's awesome, Latin Giants Trio FTW :3
Appay: Filthy smooth-headed stickmen? Haven't heard that one before... Very true, when you don't know anything about a person or their origins you shouldn't judge. -
Now I must visit all these awesome countries. x'D
