An everyday routine turned into hell for Jaycee Lee, when she was abducted by Phillip and Nancy Garrido in 1991 on her way to the school bus stop. She was just 11 years old at the time, full of life, an innocent girl. She was picked up by their car and disappeared from public view in just a matter of seconds. Her stepfather watched helplessly as this took place and chased after the car, but had no luck. Jaycee was put on the floor in the back of the car with a blanket over her and kept still with pressure keeping her down. Jaycee says she recalls not being able to hold her bladder any longer and then blacked out. When she woke up she was lead into the bush, still unable to see. She was then forced into a shed down the back of their yard. She recalls being terrified and feeling completely alone. Jaycee was kept in a box for most of the time and was isolated from the outside world by tall trees and a high fence, making it almost impossible to escape. She didnt go to school or visit a doctor for the 18 years. When she came out she was in good health but 18 years definitely takes its toll. Nancy Garrido explained to Jacey of her husbands sex addiction. By abducting Jaycee Lee it was keeping him at bait by not raping other girls. Jaycee eventually convinced herself that she was doing something good by keeping other girls safe from his reach. For 3 years straight Jaycee was forced to have sex once a week until she fell pregnant. She was only 14 when she had her first daughter and 16 for the second one. Jacey said her 2 daughters were the only thing keeping her going. In 2009 Phillip Garrido turned up at the San Francisco office with a 4 page essay explaining what it feels like having religion and sexual addictions and said he had a solution for other sex addicts. He also brought his family, introducing them falsely. Police noted their suspicious behaviour and they were investigated. Finally Jaycee Lee Dugard told the police her real name for the first time in 18 years and Nancy and Phillip Garrido admitted the kidnapping. Jaycee was then reunited with her family, introducing her 2 daughters. Phillip Garrido was sentenced to jail for 431 years and Nancy for 36 years.
It is amazing that Jaycee Lee survived this torture. The adversity she overcame is incomprehensible. The whole time for these 18 years she stayed strong and when she had her first daughter at 14 years she promised to herself that she would protect her. She home-schooled both girls and kept them healthy. It is impossible to even imagine a small degree of what she went through. Throughout the 18 years she had no help or support from anyone. She was raped so many torturous times and had 2 children completely alone. No one to hold her hand. Jaycee has shown resilience and has written a book explaining what she went through for these 18 years. Reading this book will give us a greater understanding of what she overcame. It will also give encouragement and support to people who have gone through tough situations and teach you to hold on to that slight piece of hope. -
