Personally, I believe you should respect your mum's wishes and not date at present time. Your mum is wiser than you and probably has reasons behind this decision. I believe if you wait, it will be better and you will get more out of the relationship.

I would stay friends for the time being. When you're with friends, invite him along- get to know him better.
