Ill go without refs. I like to experiment with different styles and go from there. Its worked too, actually. I only use references for pokemon cause they're so freaking detailed.

I do that by using refs and combining styles.
There for some people and others prefer to go without but I find them useful when posing -

I love references. That's usually how I get a pose right. I do things without them (like that fake comic entry) but they can be helpful.
