lol, it's all up to you. It kind of happens when you get attached to a character and you know you could actually have a conversation with them. I hope you find one you like enough to be your imaginary friend lol.

How can I find anime characters..? I'm into anime but I'm not in touch with the shows or the characters most people on GTQ are into.

Okie, so anime has different genres just like any show or book. If you're into more of the girly stuff, more like Shojo, some good animes to check out are like Vampire Knight and Fruits Basket, I think Ouran High School Host Club is one too but I've never seen it. Library Wars and Wild Ones are also really good mangas to check out.
If you're more into action and adventure, Shonen may be a better fit. One Piece, Bleach, Inuyasha, Dragon Ball Z, and Naruto are some popular names to check out. Correct me if I'm wrong about something peeps hehe.
Some other ones, like Hetalia which I'm really into, are more like comedy and history. Hetalia's about personified countries.
Also, if something contains romance, it will fall into either three of these catagories: Hetero, Yaoi, or Yuri. Hetero is like it sounds, boy x girl. Yaoi is boy x boy love, and yuri is girl x girl love. Be careful though, because some fandom can be a bit graphic...
