  In the 80's there was a man who kidnapped, killed, and defiled the corpses of at least four young girls. He took pictures and made videos. The only time he ever left his home, he was looking for victims. He was finally caught when he tried raping a girl in a park and the girl's sister went to get their guardian. When the guardian arrived, the man ran away. Only to come back to get his car. Fortunately he was arrested, and he was executed in 2009 or something. He was called the Otaku Killer.

  Otaku also means "House" and "fanatic" in Japan.
  
  Ever since that incident however, Otaku has been related to that instead, and it's made being any sort of "Otaku" an insult.
  
  Saying "OTAKUS UNITE!" is the equivlent to "WE ARE FREAKING LOSERS THAT HAVE NOTHING BETTER TO DO"
