Would You Survive an EF5 Tornado?

Tornadoes are one of Mother Nature's most mesmerizing yet violent phenomenons. Every year they take dozens, if not hundreds of lives in the United States alone. One of the most famous and deadly tornadoes in recent history was the 2011 Joplin tornado, which killed 158 people in Joplin, Missouri on May 22, 2011.

The tornado was rated an EF5, the highest rating on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. While tornadoes may seem like a fantasy to many of us, they are definitely a reality for millions of people across the world. Do you have what it takes to survive an EF5 tornado? Take this quiz to find out!

At any given point in time on an average day, where would you be?

So, you're going along with your day, and suddenly you hear that a tornado watch has been issued. What do you do?
- No action. It's only a tornado watch, after all.
- I've always wanted to be a storm chaser!
- Take some precautions. In particular, make sure I have all of my supplies.
- It's that time of year already?
- Head to my shelter! You can never be too careful with tornadoes.
As the day goes on, the sky begins to get cloudier and darker. Would this be a cause for concern?
- Of course, there's a freakin' tornado coming.
- I see lots of thunderstorms, so no alarms yet.
- Yes; I'm keeping a close eye on the situation.
- A few rain clouds, who cares?
- GET TO THE TORNADO SHELTER!!!
How can you tell when a tornado is on the ground?
- When the National Weather Service issues a tornado warning
- Power flashes
- Debris cloud
- When a visible condensation funnel extends all the way to the ground
- When I see flying cows.
- When there is a lot of lightning
Skipping ahead, you are now informed that a tornado warning has been issued for your area! What do you do?
- Head to your basement or storm cellar
- Shelter in a small interior room without windows
- Take no action. I don't see a tornado, so perhaps the warning is a false alarm
- Get under a heavy piece of furniture
- Outrun or chase the tornado in your vehicle
- Abandon your vehicle and lie flat in a ditch
- Park your vehicle under an overpass
- Panic
Do you have an emergency kit, or if you're in a vehicle or public place do you carry one with you?
- Yep. I think I've got everything I need.
- It's nothing too terribly special, but I have some basic necessities.
- I think so, but I'd have to find it
- Nope
Suddenly, you hear the ominous rumble of a tornado as it approaches you.
- I'm in my basement/tornado cellar.
- I'm in a closet/small interior room without windows.
- I'm parked under an overpass.
- Oh, Sh--
- Are you recording this? That thing is HUGE!
- I'm lying in a ditch and praying.
- I'm under a sturdy piece of furniture or inside a small public building.
- And there's a bunch of stuff flying over my head.
You take a direct hit! Everything happens so fast that it almost seems nothing has happened at all. Now what?
- Tuning in with my radio, I wait until an all-clear is given before exiting my shelter.
- I emerge from my shelter and realize that my house is gone.
- Woah! Did y'all just see that big ternader?
- I look up and realize that my vehicle has been blown away.
- I look around and realize that everything is destroyed. Everything.
The tornado has passed and an all-clear has been given. Is there still any danger looming?
- Nope, the tornado is gone.
- Um, I don't think so...?
- Yes, things such as live power lines can be hazardous.
- Yes, I could still get struck by lightning.
- Yes, someone could dislike the video of the tornado I uploaded to YouTube.
It's been one week since the tornado has hit. Those who survive embrace and hug one another, but the scars remain. How long do you think it will take to rebuild and have everything return to normal?
- Wait, it's already been a week? I need to check my Instagram NOW!
- A few years at least, but the memories will remain for much longer.
- Our community may NEVER return to normal.
- A few months will go by, then people will start to forget.
