What Type of Calvinist Are You?

If you profess to be a “Calvinist” of some sort, in the sense of being an adherent to Reformed soteriology as expressed at the Synod of Dort, this quiz will hopefully help you to not only understand where you are historically (whether you are hyper, high, or moderate), but it will also help you understand, if you read the three results, other varieties of “Calvinism,” but only in a broad, general way, due to the limitations of this quiz. It will not tell you whether your view is true, or right or wrong biblically, but simply locate your thought within an historical trajectory.

There are only three results given (Hyper, High, and Moderate), but one should carefully note that there exists broad diversity *within* each camp. For example, some forms Hyper-Calvinism are stricter, or, from the perspective of critics, *more extreme* than other varieties. Similarly, one might say there are also higher High’s (e.g., supralapsarians) and lower High’s (e.g., infralapsarians) among the High Calvinists. Whether higher or lower in this High Calvinist camp, they are *broadly* described only so far as to sufficiently distinguish them historically from Hyper- and Classic-Moderate Calvinists. Moreover, there is even a vast diversity within the classic-moderate trajectory. They are *not* all the same, though they share certain core soteriological beliefs. All of this is readily acknowledged by the author. Moreover, it is also acknowledged that both High Calvinists and Classic-Moderate Calvinists are within the boundaries of confessional orthodoxy in terms of their soteriology, even though some are more within the mainstream (or in the majority) than others. Be sure to read the questions very carefully, so as to give an accurate answer according to what you believe. Otherwise the results will be skewed and you may be left confused.

  12. Would you call your view of Christ’s death “particular redemption,” “definite atonement,” and/or a “limited atonement”?
  13. Do you believe that the gospel call, in addition to being a command for all to believe and repent, is also an invitation, and an offer (in the sense of being a *proffer*, not a *bare* or *mere* presentation of gospel propositions/facts), and a sincere, well-meant proposal of mercy wherein God is showing Himself desirous of the salvation of all that hear it, including the non-elect?
  14. Do you believe that all the unregenerate who hear the gospel call (including the non-elect) are duty-bound/responsible to believe in Christ in an evangelical or eternally saving sense (i.e., duty-faith)?
  15. Do you consider yourself in any sense a supralapsarian?
  16. Do you believe God is the author of sin in the sense of being the direct cause of it?
  17. Do you believe that God justifies the elect prior to faith, at the cross, or in eternity?
  18. If one repudiates/rejects any point of the TULIP doctrines, or what you might call the “Doctrine(s) of Grace,” does that indicate to you that such a person is very likely, if not certainly, unregenerate?
  19. If you are male, do you have the kind of beard that looks like you are in a competition with others to see who looks the most like a 16th or 17th century Reformed theologian?
  20. And, finally, this is absolutely decisive: Are you bald?
